John Gabriel: Candidate for Cleveland GM Job
Gabriel may be an option in Cavs' search for new GM
Quote:
After all the posturing is done, many around the league think former Orlando Magic general manager John Gabriel might prove to be the top candidate for the Cavaliers' vacant GM post.
That key position is open after the Cavaliers fired former GM Jim Paxson on April 21.
Gabriel, who was a scout with Portland this season, was the Magic's GM for almost eight years (from April 29, 1996, until he was fired on March 12, 2004).
He admits he has a strong attraction to the Cavaliers.
''I would be interested,'' he said. ''They've got a nice nucleus, among the best in the East. They have many exciting and great seasons ahead.''
|
I feel sorry for Cleveland fans if this goes down. Then again, Paxson was just as bad if not worse of a GM than Gabriel.

Re: John Gabriel: Candidate for Cleveland GM Job
Gabriel wasn't a bad GM, with the huge exception of the draft. As long as Gabriel doesn't get too much say with the draft, Cleveland will be better off.

You can't ignore how awful he was with the draft. If he is named the GM for Cleveland he'd have at least some say in the draft -- that's just a fact. Steven Hunter, Jeryl Sasser, Reece Gaines, Curtis Borchardt (Ryan Humphrey)...Enough said.

I didn't ignore how awful he was with the draft. However by now, hopefully, I think Gabriel realizes, if he has any modesty at all, that he isn't exactly the best at making draft decisions, and he'll just stick to more conventional draft picks instead of reaching for that elusive diamond in the rough.

He's even had poor luck taking the "safe" pick. Reece Gaines was pretty much the consensus for the Magic's pick at 15 a couple years ago and a guy that most Magic fans were happy with drafting, and he turned to possibly be the biggest bust of all the Gabriel-picked busts.

Everyone and their mother thought Reece Gaines was an excellent pick. It's hard to fault Gabriel there. I'm still personally baffled how bad Gaines turned out, considering the physical tools and success he had in college.

Re: John Gabriel: Candidate for Cleveland GM Job
I agree, Reece Gaines was simply bad luck, but the others... Gabriel sure do like them athletes
