Did you just sign Rashard Lewis for like 20 million a year and renew Dwight to a max contract? That leaves them like 15 million to fill 10 other spots.
No, Lewis isn't making 20 million a season every season, not even when you average the total of his contract over 6 years.

If I see one more "OMG 2 players for $40 million, now you only have $15 million for 10+ players!!!" posts I'm gonna scream. It's just a blatant misunderstanding of the salary cap. The Magic can still sign any of their players whom they own the Bird rights of to extensions and go over the cap as well as use the midlevel exception to sign free agents. All it means is that the Magic won't be under the cap for the next 5 years and able to sign free agents to huge deals (like 20+ other teams). Lewis is obviously overpaid, but Otis lucked out because everyone knew Howard was getting the max extension, signing Lewis to even a reasonable deal ($12 million a year) puts the Magic over the cap for the next 5 years in all likelihood. Think about it, Howard and Lewis making about $30 million a year, if ANY of Orlando's young talent warrants a decent sized extension in the next couple of years (Ariza, Redick, Nelson) they're over the cap right there anyway. The only difference is the cash out of Rich DeVos' pocket and possibly having to pay luxury tax, that's all. Paying Lewis $120 million as opposed to $70 million or $75 million makes no difference as far as flexibility for the team to sign players.
And I come to this forum and see this thread. AHH!

Too bad we draft **** though hobo. Honestly, I thought Lewis was a great fit. But for about half of what we paid him. Who were we competing against for his signature exactly? No one, he admitted it in his interview...Seattle wasn't in contention. Essentially, if we can't draft well over the next few years we're going no where. I'd bring back Weisbrod, he had a decent draft selecting Dwight and Jameer. No, only kidding. Seriously though, I've said it a million times and there are far too many reasons to explain now, but Otis needs to go.

That's all? I thought Lewis was earning the GDP of a few small nations.

The thing is, to have Dwight earning the max and signing Lewis (even if it were to half of what he got) gets the team over the cap if just ONE of Ariza, Nelson or Redick is worth signing to an extension at the end of their rookie deals (in Nelson and Redick's case). In the end, it'll likely not make much of a difference. Not to excuse it, but I think we dodged a bullet with the ridiculous overpayment. I'm just saying it's retarded for people to post things like "Well the cap is $55 million, and two players are making $40 million so that leaves $15 million for the rest of the team!". Such a misunderstanding of the cap, yet I've seen so many posts like that (despite the fact that most NBA teams are well over the cap).
