Turkoglu improves in offseason
BY JOHN DENTON
FLORIDA TODAY
ORLANDO - By his own estimation, Hedo Turkoglu lost just four or five pounds this offseason, but his slimmed-down body is noticeably different.
And his game is noticeably different as well, and that's very good news for the Orlando Magic.
After a season in which he struggled mightily with his health and shot, Turkoglu went to work on improving his game this summer. And his hard work showed this summer when he proved himself as one of the best players in the European Championships while playing for his native Turkey.
In six EuroBasket games he averaged 19.2 points per game. His best effort was a 34-point performance against Italy when he poured in five 3-pointers. Only Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki (Germany) and San Antonio's Tony Parker (France) averaged more points a game than Turkoglu in the European Championships.
His strong play has carried over to the Magic's training camp, where he has been one of the best players on the floor through the first two days. Turkoglu was a standout in Sunday morning's intrasquad scrimmage, often scoring at will with his wide array of offensive weapons.
General manager Otis Smith said he has been impressed with Turkoglu's aggressive nature when it comes to his offense and his willingness to buy into coach Stan Van Gundy's new defensive schemes.
What most involved with the Magic are eager to see, however, is how Turkgolu buys into playing with new forward Rashard Lewis. Both players have spent the majority of their careers playing the small forward position. But to play together -- and the plan is to surround star center Dwight Howard with as many long-range shooters as possible -- Turkoglu and Lewis will have to be flexible.
When Turkoglu is at small forward, the 6-foot-10 Lewis will spend time at power forward. And when the matchup dictates Lewis plays small forward, Turkoglu can slide to either shooting guard or power forward because of the vast diversity in his game.
Turkoglu feels that he and Lewis can make each other better and keep defenses from loading up on Howard inside. They have spent the voluntary workouts and the training camp sessions trying to build a bond that will carry over into the season.
"We're really trying to get to know each other right now and see what each other likes and where we like the ball," Turkoglu said. "I think we can make each other better. I think we'll enjoy playing together."
Turkoglu struggled mightily last season trying to coexist with Grant Hill. Too often, he was a passive player who settled for long-range jump shots instead of attacking the basket and using his post-up skills. As a result, he shot one of the worst percentages of his NBA career (41.9 percent) and his scoring fell to 13.3 points per game.
Turkoglu said he's finally over the mysterious illness that caused him to randomly spike a fever and have chills much of last season. He says his weight is down somewhat, but more importantly his body is stronger and leaner after an offseason of monitoring his diet and lifting weights.
"Thank goodness (the illness) is gone," he said. "I feel good. I've been playing basketball all summer, and I'm ready to go."

Couple things stuck out for me...
first was the "mysterious illness", we (this nation) have the best doctors in the world and i'm sure the organization has great team doctors, but no one could figure out his illness?
the article also mentions that they plan on putting turk at the SF and shard at PF during games this year... is this a good idea? i'm sure that it would be great offensively, but unless the schemes SVG come up with are outstanding, we will be extremely weak on the defensive side.
does turk having a great camp help his value? will this raise any brows and help induce a trade for a big?

Re: Hedo's Official Website
hi from Turkiye. you already know his full name, hidayet türkoğlu ( hy-duh-yet tewrk-owloo, the surname meaning son of Turk). i honestly don't know why i felt the need to mention this. anyway, hido, along with memo, helped the Turkish youth dream about playing in the nba. he set new very high limits for them. we had mirsad turkcan and ibrahim kutluay play for the nba prior to them but they had played a few minutes, total.
so he is a dream for the young ballers in my country, unless the stupid press is involved.
i wish him the best.

Re: Hedo's Official Website
Hedo's kicking *** so far this season. Already mentioned it in another thread, but with Dwight grabbing everything in the inside, and Hedo and Shard draining 3s from the outside, this is a pretty difficult team to stop.
Jameer's got a nice overall game, next step for him is to learn how to play with everything and become a better distributor. For the rest of the guys, learn how to play tough D and hit open jumpers.
