Smith says he doesn't expect to make a trade

Quote:
January 16, 2008

Magic fans expecting the club to make a deal before the trade deadline next month likely will be disappointed.

General Manager Otis Smith said Tuesday before the Magic's victory over Chicago that he doesn't expect the team to make a move.

While the Magic lack a true power forward they can start, Smith has no interest in either Chris Webber or P.J. Brown, veterans who are free agents.

"I don't see us doing anything. We're always trying to make our team better, but I think what we need, as a team, is more consistent play from the guys we have," Smith said.

To that end, Coach Stan Van Gundy said that his three main players -- C Dwight Howard, PF Rashard Lewis and SF Hedo Turkoglu -- need to pick up their games, especially on the defensive end.

"A lot of it starts with them," Van Gundy said.

Team is half way home

The Magic are halfway through the season after facing the Charlotte Bobcats tonight in Game No. 41.

They have played 24 games on the road -- the most in the league.

"It's just the way it has been," Van Gundy said. "It's been tough, the traveling, no question. You look at it and it's easy to forget that we also went to China [in the preseason]. It's crazy."

While the first half of the schedule has been road-heavy, the Magic could benefit the second half when, for example, they play 10 of their 14 games in March at Amway Arena.

i hope that he is just blowing smoke because we def need some veteran leadership in Orlando... ASAP!

It would be so hard to make some really useful trades with Orlando's current state right now. Much more a veteran with ledership qualities.

what?

an old vet on his way out is the ONLY type of player we need to make a deal for at this point...

edit: if you look at the game thread against CHARLOTTE you'll see my point about getting a vet like Cassell on this team... we could do a deal like:

Arroyo and Garrity for Cassell and Q Ross

and if we needed to we could throw in next year's 2nd or something of that sort... either way we could really use someone to keep this team focused and help replace what we lost in Hill and Battie. Alien is a coach on the bench and the court and he is exactly what this team needs in order for the MAGIC to have a successful season.

Re: Smith says he doesn't expect to make a trade

other players rumored to be on the block:

Randolph
AK47
J O'Neal
Richard Jefferson
J Kidd
T Mac
Mike Miller
Andre Miller
B Wallace
Williams
Hughes

i would love to see Wallace back in Orlando, but not for the contract that he currently has... the only other player i wouldn't mind in a MAGIC uni is Mike Miller, but he doesn't fit any immediate needs.

Re: Smith says he doesn't expect to make a trade

the problem with the most of these guys is their contracts. they are huge and there's nobody on our roster that we could imaginably trade (except lewis) to match up salaries unless you count turk and 2 expiring contracts, which the other team would laugh at our faces to give up (borderline) all-stars.

i like the cassell to orlando idea. sterling likes guys on their rookie contracts, so i'd imagine arroyo, garrity and redick could get the job done while taking back tim thomas, their only big contract not named elton brand or chris kaman.

of course orlando would come away like bandits in this trade so it would never happen. . .

Tim Thomas and Cassel for J.J. Arroyo and Garrity could be perfect, but there is no chance...
I think if we had kept Ariza we could make a better deal now...

i know most of those players have too big a contract... which brings me to the point that the only guy that is on the rumor mill that would work for this team is Cassell. He has said that he wants to go to a team where he feels like he can help them contend... Clippers organization respects Sam a LOT, so they will try to do what is in his best interest.

they will not let go of Thomas... and i don't know why we'd want him anyway (he's just another version of B Cook).

i could see the garrity arroyo and a pick for cassell... that is a juicy offer that i couldn't see Baylor not take a close look at.

Re: Smith says he doesn't expect to make a trade

we are stacked at the 2 with Bogans, Evans, Redick, and Dooling picking up time there.

IMO there are two things that are DESPERATELY needed if we are going to have any shot of advancing this postseason... we need a veteran leader and some size.

If we can kill two birds with one stone all the better, but i'd like to see us try to get a deal done for Cassell who can come in and help lead this team (even if he isn't playing significant minutes) along with a long defender like Q Ross who can come in and shut someone down...

If we could somehow get a true 4 here, that would be a huge lift... but there just isn't that much available at that position (although i have heard that MEMPHIS may be shopping Stromile Swift).

edit: although i can't really stand the guy anymore because of his whining and inability to fit into a team for the last decade... i think C Webb would be a great fit here and could prove to be very useful for the remainder of the season. He's clearly out of shape so i don't anticipate he is expecting to start, although we are still talking about C Webb...

he is currently in talks with GOLDEN ST, but maybe by some divine miracle we can pry him away for minimal $$$.

Re: Smith says he doesn't expect to make a trade

I don't really understand the logic behind some of the deals you guys want to do. What is the purpose of getting a guy like CWebb or Cassell? To rent them for one season, maybe two, just to score a few extra wins? Both of those guys are at the tail-end of their careers and really only interested in playing for a team with a real shot to win a ring ... and Orlando is not a realistic contender right now. A couple more years of growth from Dwight and a couple nice player additions and we might be ready, but not right now.

Cassell or Webber are shortsighted fixes. And neither of those guys have ever really been mistaken as a "leader" in their days. Well, maybe Cassell at times but he usually plays really well for someone for a season or two and then sours and turns to crap.

Instead of Webber ... play Gortat. Play Augustine. See what these guys can do for the future. And work on getting Vasquez to come over.

Instead of Cassell try to find a deal for a younger, taller (than Jameer) PG who is buried on someone's bench but might have some potential.

I'm not sure if Diener would have been the answer but it would have been nice if we really gave him a chance to prove himself before we let him go. Seemed like whenever he did play he did fairly well. Reminds me of JJ right now. Not going to figure out what these guys can do with their asses on the bench.

i don't see why we can't be contenders this year first off...

i'm not all hot and bothered about getting C Webb, but he's a free agent that can be brought in for a year or two... same thoughts with Cassell...

i'd hate to repeat myself all over again, but these are guys that can come in and really help this team stay focused (which they seem to have a glaring weakness in). We can always continue to build for the future without them being in our plans... but do you always want to just be "building for the future"? We have the talent and depth to see how deep we can go into the playoffs and i see no reason the MAGIC can't make it to the eastern conference finals... i don't understand the point of being so pessimistic about THIS season when we have an opportunity to try and build on something special that is happening NOW.

it's not like getting these guys will kill our cap or anything either, so i don't see what the big deal with bringing in a guy for a 1 or 2 years. SAN ANTONIO is notorious for doing just that... bringing in vets for a couple seasons so they can contribute to a winning cause.
