Magic Turkoglu suffers a setback in his recovery from a broken hand

Quote:
Hedo Turkoglu hoped to receive good news about his broken left hand when he visited the doctor Wednesday.

Instead, Turkoglu received a cast.

An X-ray revealed that one of the five screws used to repair Turkoglu’s fractured fifth metacarpal had come loose, which prompted the doctor to fit the injured small forward with a cast to stabilize the area further.

“That kind of upsets me, because that puts some time setback,” Turkoglu said. “That’s the thing I really hate about it, because I was really hoping to come back soon and be a part of this team.”

Turkoglu sustained the injury Nov. 2, in the Orlando Magic’s season-opener against the Denver Nuggets. He underwent surgery the next morning, and team officials said then he would miss at least four weeks.

Now, it seems highly unlikely that he’ll be back by the end of this month.

The Magic miss his veteran savvy, his outside shooting and his ball-handling ability, especially at the ends of games.

Turkoglu, who is normally upbeat and cheerful, said he isn’t in any physical pain, but he seemed discouraged when he spoke with reporters after his teammates finished practice Wednesday afternoon.

“Week by week we’re going to take some X-rays and see how the healing process goes and go from there,” he said.

Magic coach Jacque Vaughn is trying to keep Turkoglu upbeat.

“I just try to lift his spirits,” Vaughn said. “I ask him if he has any recommendations, what he’s seeing out there. So it’s a communication to keep him involved.”
