The Orlando Magic are resigned to the fact that Grant Hill -- against their cautious wishes -- will attempt to come back and play sometime before the 2003-2004 season ends.
The Magic want Hill -- who has had four surgeries on his left ankle in three years -- to continue his rehabilitation and return the following season.
Quote:
Asked if Hill might be ready to play by, say, next March, Magic Coach Doc Rivers said on Monday during a media luncheon, "He could be . . . I have no idea, to be honest. He's working his butt off. I think Grant, in Grant's mind . . . I think he's thinking, 'I'm not finished this season.' "
Magic General Manager John Gabriel reiterated the franchise's desire for Hill to sit out the season as a precaution after three false starts but admitted, "I think Grant will want to try to play."
I hope for Orlando's sake that he doesn't. I don't think the Magic will let him touch the court in a real game until they are 110% sure that he'll be okay again -- otherwise, what's the point? Even if he somehow convinced them that he can play, he'd probably be getting less than 20 MPG off the bench at best.
I really feel bad for Grant Hill. If the guy had never gotten hurt he would have ended his career a Hall of Famer and one of the 50 best of all-time. Fickle fans forget how AWESOME Grant was before he was injured

I'm with you -- he was a fantastic. He led the leagues in triple doubles, was an all-NBA guy, all-star leading vote getter, etc. I really wish we would've gotten a chance to see him and McGrady really play together.

Would have been one of the best wing combos in the history of the NBA. Could possibly have ended up as good as MJ and Scottie. A lot of people think Tmac's impact would have gone done with a healthy Hill, but I think Tmac would be even better with Hill at his side.
A doubt he plays this year. Dont understand why he doesnt just wait until next season, just to make sure.
they really need to make him sit this next season, he thinks that if he can walk that he can ball, at least make him sit for 3/4 of the season, come for the playoffs and he will be great. once he gets injured again, he can sit for the offseason
Part of it is financial. I read if he plays 15 games or less over a certain span of time, Orlando can get some kind of relief, but if he plays more than that they get nothing.
So if he comes back and plays for 20 games and they lose him again, then they will not have him and they will not get any relief.
I understand he wants to get back, but he should feel like he owes it to the team to do what they want. They've basically paid him like 60 million for almost nothing.

I agree with you. He still had that quick forst step last year when he tried to return- that has not left him. Nobody close to his size had as quick a first step.
I really think the Pistons were bad when they made him play with a busted ankle during the playoffs his last year there. It would be nice to see Hill play again. Even at 75%, he's better than most small forwards today.

Besides skills, he brings more to the court, he would still be an excellent player at that percentage of his former self.
