Lost on Chris Knight to Dartmouth, it will always be hard to beat the ivies when we have to recruit from largely the same pool.

Also mentions visits to UNC Wilmington and Hofstra previously.

Re: 2017 Recruiting

Updates on Class:

BU appears to be hot on PG Myles Franklin:

Walter Whyte cancelled trip to Davidson and not sure if the same will happen with us. Penn and Yale look like they are the frontrunners on him.

Mike McGuirl Committed to K-State, it just isn't on VC

Miles Brookins and Jared Rhoden appear to have reclassified for 2018.

Logan Strom is probably going to wind up playing P5 football.

BU also appears to be after Connor Crabtree. He has visited AU and UNC Asheville with plans to visit Stetson this weekend and BU next weekend. BU, Campbell, American and UNC Asheville were at his High School Sept. 19th.

I don't know what the postponed Davidson trip means, but I'm not totally buying into Penn and Yale as frontrunners. Penn already got verbals from two good swingmen and Yale got a verbal from a similar sized player as Whyte. Northeastern also got a verbal from a 6'9" SF. I'm not saying BU is the favorite, but some of the other situations are more crowded.

Re: 2017 Recruiting

BU and Monmouth appear to be the final two for R.J. Cole...for now. He can still take two more official visits, so he may not be done with those.

If the final battle is us against Monmouth, something in our favor is Cheddi Mosely went to St. Anthony's like Cole, although I don't think they were teammates. Monmouth has an advantage because Monmouth coach King Rice's son will be playing for St. Ant's this year with Cole.

Re: 2017 Recruiting

Suk Mathon and his teammates worked out with NBA free agent Matt Bonner. Bonner is listed as 6'10" in shoes (although I don't know his height in Crocs!). I know Suk is a bit in the foreground but he looks to be at least as tall as Bonner; maybe even taller if you compare their shoulders.

It's not a big deal, but I would be extra excited if next year Suk was in the 6'11" range as opposed to his currently listed 6'9".

RJ Cole Commits to Howard

Quote:
Class of 2017 point guard R.J. Cole from St. Anthony’s High School (NJ) has decided on where he will play his college basketball.

“I have decided on committing to Howard University,” he told MADEHoops.

He held higher offers, but after establishing a close relationship with Head Coach Kevin Nickelberry, Cole knew Howard was the right place for him.

“I chose Howard because of the connection I have with Coach Nickelberry and the bond he has with my family,” said Cole. “The academics are great and a degree from Howard says a lot, but most importantly I felt like paving my own path and being at Howard allows me to do that.”

Nickelberry sees a lot of potential in Cole and believes he can do a lot for their program.

“Coach says he would love to coach a kid like me because of what I can bring to the team,” he said. “He believes in the type of player I am and he will allow me to play even through mistakes. He believes that I’m the player that can get them to the NCAA Tournament and make it to the next level as long as I keep getting better.”

Nickelberry has a plan for Cole right when steps onto campus his freshman year.

As soon as I arrive on campus I will play right away,” Cole said. “I will be filling the shoes of James Daniels who led the nation in scoring last year. I am looking forward to having a big role as a freshman and can’t wait for the challenges that are ahead of me.”

I think the bolded part is the biggest difference maker between BU and Howard or Monmouth and Howard. Cole would have been on the bench for two years for us and one year for Monmouth. It will be tough selling any truly promising point guard on that.

Re: 2017 Recruiting

Very possible, although I won't discount the possibility he made a better connection with Coach Nickelberry than with Coach Jones or Rice.

I was hoping he would pick BU. He and Foreman would have been a fun backcourt if they played together.

I'd check verbal commits now again if I were you. I think we will be just fine.

Re: 2017 Recruiting

An absolutely monsterous pickup for BU, arguably our best recruit since Mo Watson.

Had offers from 30 programs. This is HUGE.

A good breakdown of what he will bring to BU at New England Recruiting Report.

Quote:
Whyte's career to date at St. Luke's has been nothing short of spectacular. In his junior season alone, he averaged nearly 20 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists per game last year while earning NEPSAC Class C MVP honors and leading St. Luke's to a New England championship.

Re: 2017 Recruiting

Tremendous news. I've been preparing myself for disappointment even though our competition kept getting other commitments which helped our chances.

Since Mo I'd say Whyte is our best recruit, although Hankerson is close. I'd have to go back to Corey Lowe ('10) to think of a recruit of the same caliber. Lowe committed to Providence initially before being recruited over. As a side note, Blaise was also a highly ranked recruit and was in the ESPN Top-100.

The arrival of Whyte will offset a lot of what we lose when Fanning graduates. Physically they are about the same, although I think Fanning has a better handle and is more creative with the ball. I do like that Whyte has started developing a mid-range game. On the AAU circuit I've read Whyte described as a glue guy, so he also brings those intangibles to win games.

Finally, the marketing team was surprisingly quick to put together a graphic for his commitment.

Welcome to BU, Walter!
