Should Coach Jones get a contract extension?

If the widely reported contract that Joe Jones signed in 2013 expires in 2017-2018, then there will be a decision time either during this season or at the end of the season on whether he should remain the coach for 208-2019 and beyond. I have not seen anything about Coach Jones signing another extension so I believe this is probably a make or break year for him.

I am curious to see what everyone else thinks of where the team needs to be in order to re-sign Joe Jones to another contract extension. \

Here are a few questions I have for other posters on their temperature on this matter:

1. What do you think of the job Coach Jones has done so far? Should he be fired or is he safe no matter what happens this season?

2. If this is a make or break season for you, what sort of record or accomplishment are you looking for that would make you want BU to bring him back? Alternatively, what must not happen for you to want BU to bring him back? If he does receive a new contract, how many years should it be for?

3. Are there any players on the roster that would make you hesitant to fire Coach Jones?

My take:
1. I think Joe Jones has done about an average job at this point. Last year was definitely one of his better years as a coach, excluding a pretty putrid OOC. The suspension of the three players is a question mark that I don't think any of us can say was correct or incorrect at this point. I would lean towards Joe Jones should not be hired or fired based on his past work at this point, meaning this should be a make or break year.

2. I think if this is a make or break year BU needs to finish either in the top two again, or preferably, playing for the Patriot League Tournament Championship. This should still be a roster capable of contending when we get Mosely and Barnes back as well as adding Walter Whyte. Anything less than top 2 in the regular season or top 2 in the tournament, probably should lead to a change.

3. The main drawback to firing Coach Jones would be the recruiting hit we could take and maybe losing some players out to transfer. Walter Whyte leaving could be a similar blow to the program that Mo's transfer caused, leading to the program being set back for two years. Nonetheless, BU does have a certain draw to it where you should be able to get higher rated players than at least half of the Patriot League schools. This part is definitely the big question mark if Jones is fired that we would find out.

Re: Should Coach Jones get a contract extension?

Based on his performance he shouldn't be close to being fired. The team has been consistently above average or better with him at the helm. It would take a scandal or two or three really bad years to justify firing him.

However I am lukewarm about offering an extension; I've expected better results. As things go he probably will get an extension because coaches at this level have leverage. Athletic departments don't want to risk losing recruiting classes and administrations don't want to pay for two coaches (the newly hired coach and the fired coach) for any period of time.

Not that I'm placing all of my hopes on him but I really hope Coach Perri can make a big impact on the team and fortify what I perceive to be Coach Jones' weaknesses: in-game strategy and preparing the team for big games.

I would offer him a modest extension during the season most likely. He is recruiting at a good clip, running a very clean and tight knit program, and we've been solid during the regular season. No shame in losing to Lehigh last year in the PL Tourney.

Agreed. I definitely wouldn't say they have to be top 2 in the conference for us to keep him on.

I think he should get an extension. I think as long as he's above .500 in the league, he will be safe.

(However, it would be very nice to see a championship sometime soon...)

Re: Should Coach Jones get a contract extension?

The one thing that sticks out in my mind most from this past season was the Bucknell game at home. At the half, the sideline reporter pointed out to Jones that his team was getting dominated in the paint and asked how he would adjust to it. Jones defiantly responded that they were going to stick to their game plan and continue feeding the ball inside. True to his word, he did just that and BU had an abysmal second half and lost the game by twenty. I've seen too many games where BU seems unprepared and, quite frankly, lost on the court. By all accounts, Coach Jones is a very nice man and a great mentor to his players - to me that's worth something. But I've seen too many cringeworthy games to feel excited about giving him an extension. I'm rooting for him to have a great year this season, but I just don't know.....

Re: Should Coach Jones get a contract extension?

I think I weighed in on this a little bit last season... if you're a mid-major school and you're not Gonzaga, all you can really ask for is for your team to be in the mix for a conference championship every season. Jones, for the most part, has delivered on that goal. He hasn't struck gold yet with a championship, and Bucknell definitely has owned us during his tenure- those are both valid points. But winning a conference title is especially difficult in a conference like the Patriot League that has so much parity that a 5-win Holy Cross team winning four straight road games in March is a real possibility.

He guided this program through a conference transition which included an NCAA tourney ineligible year. He guided this program through the Mo saga (which, regardless of the amount of blame for that you want to pin on him, could have been a program-crippling thing. Turns out it may have been for the best anyways). He guided this program through a season in 2015-16 with so many injuries that we had, what, 6 scholarship players available by the end? And who knows what happened last year with our three buddies but even through that we were right there with Lehigh in the semifinals.

If you want to argue that Jones' tenure has been disappointing, I have no problem with that. When your team is good enough to win a championship and they don't, it's disappointing. But in my opinion, his performance has not come close to a fireable level and I would be happy to see him extended, assuming this upcoming season somewhat resembles his first six.
