PDB appearance!

Seriously though, you are steady in love with Paris TX. That's about the upteenth time I've heard you mention it in relation to something that constitutes as good cinema. I've never seen it myself, but I've wanted to, and you're just making me a little more anxious to do so. Are you a big Wim Wenders fan? Have you seen Wings of Desire? If so, what did you think? And if you have seen Wings of Desire, I'm sure you've seen City of Angels. What did you think about that whole thing and how it was remade for a mainstream American audience? I wrote a paper back in college about how I personally didn't like City of Angels, but I felt it was made absolutely true to form and done correctly for it's target audience. I think it's one of the more interesting original/remake duos to look at in cinema if you're talking about effectiveness at getting to it's target audience.

Re: Scenes That Give You Chills

sorry for the uh delayed reaction.

I am not a big Wim Wenders fan, meaning I haven't seen hardly any of his movies. I have, however, seen Wings of Desire. And City of Angels. I generally agree with yr comparison. I saw City of Angels first, unsurpisingly. Going into Wings of Desire I was expecting something quite different, something more analgous to City of Angels. What it is this sort of subtle & nuanced & bittersweet meditation on these themes of love, loss, desire, etc. I think City of Angels is fairly true to Wings of Desire it just takes these ideas that Wings of Desire subtley plays around with and amplifies them so anyone who can see or hear will know "WHAT THIS MOVIE IS ABOUT" ... like in uh, don't be a menace to south central when yr drinking yr juice in the hood. "MESSAGE." etc.

but I think City of Angels was pretty well done for the most part and as you said a rather interesting remake. It certainly isn't as interesting as Wings of Desire and it doesn't kick around in yr brain as much but again, as you said, it's a perfect treatment of the subject matter for the target audience.

haha, i'm not adding a lot other than basically agreeing w you.

Re: Scenes That Give You Chills

BUMP.

Extras Christmas Special - Andy Millman has a touching crisis of conscience.

King's Speech - King George VI finally gives his big speech.

Notice the staging in this scene. In the beginning there is a shot of the microphone directly in front of him, partially blocking his face. It shows the microphone as an obstacle and an obstruction, and as the scene goes on and he takes more command of his speech and becomes more confident, that shot goes away, replaced by a close-up of him giving the speech without the microphone in front. As the scene progresses we see varying angled shots, all without the mic in front of him.

I mean, this scene is already great on so many other levls, but shit like that gets me so giddy when I see it in movies.

EDIT: Also Geoffrey Rush's hand gestures looking as if he's composing Beethoven's symphony is pretty dope too.
