Signing Wallace a long shot, but Sixers are still aiming

Quote:
Rasheed Wallace? You mean the 6-foot-11 forward and Philadelphia native who made almost $17 million last season while helping lead the Detroit Pistons to the 2004 NBA championship?

Well, it's worth a shot, even if the Sixers have only the midlevel exception to offer Wallace, a total of roughly a little more than $5 million per season.

"If he decides to sign with the Knicks for the exception, people will wonder why we didn't do anything," King said yesterday after the Sixers held their first summer league workout at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The Knicks are expected to try to convince Wallace that New York is the place to be even though they, like the Sixers, are over the salary cap and can offer just the midlevel exception. The Sixers, of course, can trot out Wallace in front of his hometown fans 41 games per season.

The Pistons, meanwhile, can offer Wallace whatever they want. Sources have said they will start at $10 million per season for a four- or five-year contract, well over what the Sixers and Knicks can offer.

However, Wallace doesn't seem to be in any hurry to decide. He is relaxing with his family before he arrives in Philadelphia for his annual summer basketball camp, which begins Monday at his alma mater, Simon Gratz High School.

People close to Wallace say his wife and family will have major input on where he plays for the next few years.

Bill Strickland, the agent representing Wallace, did not return a phone call seeking comment yesterday.

What would the lineup be if we got him?

Maybe:

C Dalembert
F R.Wallace
F Iguodala
G Iverson
G Snow

Or...

C Dalembert
F R.Wallace
F G.Robinson
G Iguodala
G Iverson

One on one, even one on two, when the guy they call the Answer is on a one-way trip to the basket, you better just foul him. People can hate all day about the number of shot attempts. But, damn, give him props for even getting them up. He's small enough to have every shot contested. That 39% shooting sounds terrible to the regular reader, but have you seen these NBA players lately?"

The crazy thing about this, out of all the ludicrous fantasies of landing players over the Sixers heads, bringing back Rasheed seems the most realistic. And he's the only current FA that would fit well in O'Brien's system, while allowing Dalembert to keep his starting role. It's a longshot, hell it's a dream.. but what else do we have, right now?
