Wasn't he signed to a 6-year deal a few years back? Do the 76ers have to pay him off for the next 3-4 years?

Yeah, whether it was a buy out or plain out waving they have to pay him the next four seasons. I'm hoping it was a buy-out and people just called it a waiving, other wise I'll be pissed off just thinking about $12 million in dead money over the next four seasons.

Now with this happening, I have a feeling the Sixers won't make another move for the rest of the offseason.

Quote:
The high point of Greg Buckner's time with the 76ers came July 25, 2002, when he signed a 6-year guaranteed contract worth $18 million. After that, some brief flashes notwithstanding, things went mostly downhill.

After two seasons, the 6-4 guard/forward will try again elsewhere, more than welcoming yesterday's buyout and waiving by the Sixers. He is reportedly already on the radar of the Denver Nuggets, and perhaps two other teams.

"He played pretty well the first year, playing his most minutes ever [1,514], but for whatever reason, it didn't work out," said Steve Kauffman, Buckner's agent. "He played for Larry Brown, but lost minutes with the coaches who followed [Randy Ayers and Chris Ford]."

It is believed Buckner received a little more than $8 million of the remaining $12.9 million on his contract. He would recoup some portion of the rest on a fresh contract with another team.

"I think it's the best situation for Greg," Sixers coach Jim O'Brien said. "This gives him a chance to hook on with a team that values what he can offer."

So basically an $8 million buyout, saves us about almost $5 million over the course of the next four seasons.

Instead of the $12.96 million the Sixers were to pay him, Buckner apparently will get $7.5 million not to play for them and be able to sign with another team (the Nuggets).

So anywhere from $7.5 to little over $8 million.

Greg Buckner's a defensive specialist, who the Sixers signed to a lucrative contract while letting Raja Bell walk. After the 01-02 season. He was a target of Larry Brown along with Monty Williams.

At the time of the signing the Sixers management spun it like Buckner could play the 1 - 3 effectively.. he couldn't. It was probably the worst signing the Sixers have had in a long time.

Probably, though I'm still looking for them to try and trade GRob.

But, damn, give him props for even getting them up. He's small enough to have every shot contested. That 39% shooting sounds terrible to the regular reader, but have you seen these NBA players lately?"
