Iverson upbeat despite slow start..
Quote:
ORLANDO, Fla. - This season certainly has been a new experience for 76ers point guard Allen Iverson. A new position, four new starters, and new hope that last year's 33-49 record was an aberration.
So far, the results have been mixed for the Sixers, who are off to a 6-7 start after Saturday's 105-99 loss in Orlando against the Magic.
They will resume their five-game road trip tomorrow at San Antonio.
Off on Sunday, they returned to the court yesterday and will practice today in the Sunshine State before heading to Texas.
Iverson is again running the point, and is getting accustomed to playing with four new starters - second-year forwards Josh Davis and Kyle Korver, rookie swingman Andre Iguodala, and center Marc Jackson.
Despite the relative youth of this lineup, Iverson remains optimistic.
"I feel great about the team," he said after yesterday's 21/2-hour workout at Dr. Phillips High School. "I feel good about the new direction we're heading in and I honestly think offensively and defensively we can play with the best of them."
Iverson isn't the only one who has put a positive spin on the early part of the season, despite the losing record and long stretches of inconsistency.
When he has taken the pulse of the team, coach Jim O'Brien, like his superstar, believes the Sixers are on the right course.
"I think the mood of the team is great," O'Brien said. "I love our attitude. I think they practice with a great deal of intensity and, as a result, they will get better."
One thing that could alter his mood is this road trip, which includes games in Memphis, Houston and Atlanta. The Sixers are 1-4 on the road and haven't won away from the Wachovia Center since a 98-95 opening-night victory at Boston.
Iverson acknowledges that the Sixers have given away some winnable games, the most recent being Saturday's 105-99 loss at Orlando. The Sixers held a 10-point lead over the Magic with less than eight minutes remaining in the third quarter.
"We feel we let one slip away and that was one we easily could have won," he said.
