Road Trip getting away from Sixers..
Quote:
ATLANTA - Kyle Korver sat at his locker, staring straight ahead, trying without success to comprehend the 76ers' latest manner of defeat.
Nearly incredulous that the Houston Rockets had made less than 32 percent of their field-goal attempts Saturday night but still won, Korver asked reporters, "What did we shoot?"
Told it was close to 40 percent, he asked, "Did we have many turnovers?"
"Sixteen," the reply came.
"Then how did we lose?" the Sixers forward asked.
Three reasons, actually. The Rockets made 26 free throws to the Sixers' 12, they outscored the visitors by 21-6 on second-chance points, and a struggling Tracy McGrady made the shot that counted with 25.6 seconds remaining. It spelled a 77-76 loss for the Sixers, their fourth in a row overall and seventh straight on the road.
The season is only 16 games old, but the refrain is familiar.
"We can't let it get into our heads that we've lost a couple of games," Korver said. "I don't want to play another year like last year."
No one wants a repeat of last season's gloomy 33-49 failure, but it looks as if that's where the 6-10 Sixers are heading if they don't improve in all areas of the game. Shots aren't falling. Defensive mistakes are being made. Key rebounds are eluding them. Confidence is waning.
Jim O'Brien's first season as coach is barely more than a month old, but the Sixers already are at a crossroads. They must win tonight's game at Philips Arena against the hapless Atlanta Hawks - a team that is 2-14 and lost back-to-back weekend games by a combined 45 points - or fall into a deeper funk.
The Sixers haven't won in an opponent's arena since Nov. 3, when they defeated the Boston Celtics in their season opener. Since then, they have had a couple of shots at ending their road woes but haven't been able to finish.
