O'Brien not dissatisfied with Willie Green's play..
Quote:
PHILADELPHIA - Jim O'Brien doesn't understand why Willie Green not playing in the last two games merits questions from the media.
"One of the things I guess I have a difficulty with is we've got 12 people [on the Sixers active roster] and eight people that work their way into the rotation," a feisty O'Brien said after Monday's practice at PCOM. "So every time somebody falls out of the rotation, it's like a big story. It doesn't seem like a big story to me."
It's probably a story based on what O'Brien said Oct. 6.
On the second day of training camp at Duke, O'Brien insisted that he was confident Green would be a consistent producer at guard for the Sixers after only getting regular minutes for the last month of his rookie season.
"I don't really think it'll be a problem for him to take the next step," O'Brien said that day. "I'd be absolutely shocked if he didn't.
"He can really create his own shot, he can put the ball in the basket, he can get to the foul line, he can drive into the middle and he's strong enough to be a good defensive player."
Green averaged 13.6 points per game in the final 12 games of the 2003-04 season. He is averaging 7.6 points in 18 games this year.
O'Brien stressed that he isn't dissatisfied with Green at all - he just wants to take a look at John Salmons, who is three inches taller than Green, at Salmons' natural position (point guard) in a backup role.
"I said it [Sunday] night before the [Milwaukee] game, I said it last night after the game and I'm saying it right now - he has done nothing wrong," O'Brien said of Green. "It's a decision I wanted to make to see what Johnny's doing."
Green isn't letting the ups and downs in his playing time get to him.
"There's been about four or five of us that sat out two, three games this season," said Green, who stayed after practice to work on his shooting. "Those guys came back strong - Kenny Thomas, Sam [Dalembert], Brian Skinner, Josh [Davis] - you've just got to stay ready. That's part of being a professional, part of being a part of team."
Asked if he could see that happening in the next couple of games, O'Brien hesitated before responding, "Who knows?"
