Iguodala making a case for Rookie of the Year..
Quote:
Before declaring that the NBA rookie of the year race is a private affair between Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic and Emeka Okafor of the Charlotte Bobcats, the top two selections in the last draft, another lesser-known first-year player is having a very impressive season.
Using a USA TODAY rookie index, Andre Iguodala of the Philadelphia 76ers, the ninth pick in the draft, might be having the best season of any rookie.
Going into Monday's games, Okafor leads all rookies in scoring (14.8) and rebounding (11.6) and Howard is in the top three in rebounding (10.3), field goal percentage (52.7%) and blocked shots (1.67).
But Iguodala, who plays a combination shooting guard-small forward position, is the only one of the rookies in the top 10 in all eight of the standard statistical categories — scoring, rebounds, assists, steals, blocked shots, field goal percentage, three-point percentage and free throw percentage.
USA TODAY subjectively picked 10 early rookie-of-the-year candidates and ranked them against each other in four statistical categories that encompass formulas to measure every aspect of the game. The player who performs best in a category gets one point, down to 10 for the worst score. The lowest total is theoretically the rookie-of-the-year leader. Iguodala finished seven points better than Okafor and Howard, who are tied for second.
"He's a stat-sheet stuffer," said Iguodala's teammate, Aaron McKie. "He rebounds, he defends, he can do a lot of little things. He's full of energy, ready to play at all times."
Iguodala, who left Arizona after his sophomore season, has already been compared to Scottie Pippen by many observers and it's a comparison he likes.
"I model my game after him, being able to bring the ball up the court and lead the team in a lot of statistical categories," he said. "I think I can be an energy guy, hustle on defense to create some havoc, and convert it to offense."

It'd be nice if he won it, but to win ROY, you have to have more points than what Iggy is serving up. I think Okafor could very well have this thing sealed up with the numbers he's putting up.
