Sixers Shots grades O'Brien..

Quote:
Hw's The Coach Doing?
The new year is almost upon us, so now is as good a time as any to reflect on the job that Coach Jim O’Brien has done to date.

DEFENSE
O’Brien prides himself on being a defensive oriented coach, so let’s start here. When O’Brien accepted the Sixers’ head coaching job, he said the team would finish in the top five in field goal percentage defense. Currently the Sixers are tied for seventh in the league in that category, giving up 43.1 percent shooting. I may be in the minority here, but where the Sixers are concerned, that stat is misleading. Defense ends when the ball changes hands without a score. As a group this team does not put bodies on people when the opposition’s shots go in the air. Where defensive rebounding is concerned this team is just not well drilled, or well schooled. Anybody that has watched the Sixers this season knows that they give up way too many second shots in the fourth quarter. That’s not a stat that is easy to gather, but there is a strong correlation between the Sixers’ numerous fourth quarter meltdowns and an inability to control the defensive glass during key stretches of games. However, the Sixers are fifth in the league in steals per game. So I do give O’Brien credit for creating a defense that gets its hands on a lot of balls. Therefore, despite my frustration at O’Brien’s apparent lack of emphasis on defensive rebounding, the ball-hawking aspect of the defense gets O’Brien a grade of C-.

OFFENSE
This is a little trickier. The Sixers are 15th in the league in scoring. Hardly spectacular, but recently with Allen Iverson’s outbursts, they’ve been consistently over 100 points per game. Marc Jackson has proven to be a capable NBA scorer and Kyle Korver scores in bunches. I think as O’Brien really gets his rotations down, this team will be a very solid scoring team. The albatross for this squad is that it gets the ball stolen from it at the eight highest rate in the league. This rests largely on Allen Iverson. If O’Brien figures out a way to have Iverson take better care of the ball, we’ll see this team improve by a couple of points or so per game. Still, I’m not dissatisfied with our team’s offense. O’Brien gets a grade of B.
