O'Brien hunting for ways to use Green with Iverson..
Quote:
The questions keep popping up about the 76ers, even if they are 48 games into their 2004-05 season, seemingly running through quicksand in search of first place in the Atlantic Division.
The questions yesterday, one day after Willie Green played another fine game while replacing Allen Iverson in the starting lineup, mostly concerned Green and why Sixers coach Jim O'Brien says an Iverson-Green combination in the backcourt doesn't work.
It may be an irrelevant point tonight. O'Brien listed Iverson, suffering from flu-like symptoms, as "doubtful" for the game against the Memphis Grizzlies at the Wachovia Center. If he can't go, Green will take his place at point guard.
Green did that Monday night in New Jersey, playing a career-high 43 minutes and scoring 28 points in the Sixers' 107-97 overtime loss to the Nets. The second-year player also equaled a career best with 10 field goals. He took 15 shots, but one of them was a half-court heave that ended the first half.
After the game, O'Brien, who said last week that "the combination of Allen and Willie together has not worked for us," sounded as though he might be willing to take another look.
"Just because the combination of Allen at the point and Willie at [shooting guard] hasn't worked in the past, doesn't mean it can't work in the future," he said.
"Over the last 30 games, we're 17-13," he said. "A lineup with Allen and Willie and Andre [Iguodala] and two of our big guys on the court, the other team is shooting 51 percent. That's not an insignificant number. That doesn't mean it can't produce in the future."
