Getting Rid of McKie
This man is 35 years old already and still has three years left on his contract. I'm not sure how much he's making, but I know he isn't cheap. He's been really bad after the Finals run we had in '01, hesitating on open shots and getting injured. His stats for this season were 2.2 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 16.4 minutes on 43% shooting. How the hell do you play 16 minutes and only score two points?! In the four playoff games he's had he plays about 14 minutes per game and has only shot three times the entire series (making one)! Should we buy him out because I don't think there's a steam dumb enough to take him with that contract. Or do we let him stay and finish his career here? He is a native of Philadelphia too even going to college in Temple.

Re: Getting Rid of McKie
Aaron McKie as bad as he might be offensively, he's still servicable in short stints on defense. A buyout would work, but the team would still be on the books to pay McKie a set amount throughout the duration of his contract. Of course they wouldn't be on the hook for the whole contract, but it would be dead money just sitting there.
Buy-outs aren't completely bad, I just hate the idea of buying out a player and then watching them play for someone else and being productive (ala Greg Buckner). Aaron McKie is servicable enough on defense, and capable enough when it comes to shooting threes, that he'd find a job somewhere if we bought him up.
I'd rather try and convince him to take the player option to get out of his contract after next season.

I'm not sure many teams would want McKie if we bought him out. And if he does end up on another team I don't think he will be playing any better than he did for us.
Why would he give up that big contract he has, that's A LOT of money.

Re: Getting Rid of McKie
McKie doesn't give you much nowadays on the court. He does seems to be a good influence and spokesman off the court. Now that's not worth what he is getting paid but blame Billy King for that. At his money, we could get a decent player. He is clearly done. I didn't like the contract he got anyway when they resigned him. He never was a good player. I always saw him as above average and at times could be good. Never consistent with his game. I guess we will have to bite the bullet with him. Hopefully one day a package deal comes up and a team will take him. Wishful thinking but you never know.

Re: Getting Rid of McKie
Let him ride it out here. He's given us all he has had for years now and is important in the locker room. MJax and Ollie will be coming off the books after next year, I think. We also have Macculloch and Mashburn.

What?? For one, he's a Larry Brown favourite. If LB was willing to take DC off our hands, you know he'll take an Aaron McKie. Coaches like that, I think overvalue that "veteran leadership" a little too much.
I agree w/ PhilPhanatic's explanation on McKie - he can still be productive in short stints off the bench. It is worrisome knowing we're on the hook for 3 more yrs at that rate, but after the Cwebb deal, I'm confident BK will deal him the 1st chance he gets. I'll let BK off the hook for those signings b/c I think he was influenced a little by Larry Brown on some of those decisioins.

Re: Getting Rid of McKie
He isn't worth the money. I, too, know he isn't coming in cheap and his production on the court has greatly declined. What used to be one of the bright spots on the bench has become inconsistent due to shape and inability to play for long periods, I'm just not impressed with his legs and don't find him fresh enough nor in game-shape. McKie, at one point, was a harsh defender and a serviceable offensive player. Now, he's literally worthless, IMHO.
Loyalty counts, but with a young team on the rise, I'd take all the extra cap that I could take to attract the right free agents. I can see Philly becoming one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference in the near future, rather then much later.
