Sixers spy a few free agent big men..
Quote:
While the 76ers attempt to re-sign restricted free-agent center Samuel Dalembert, they have their eyes on some potentially affordable free-agent frontcourt players.
Sixers president and general manager Billy King mentioned Miami forward Christian Laettner, Phoenix center Steven Hunter, Boston forward Antoine Walker and Indiana forward-center Dale Davis earlier this week.
King was an assistant coach with Indiana when Davis, 36, started his career, and has always admired his professionalism. Davis and Hunter are the type of players the Sixers could use off the bench: shot-blockers and rebounders who are defense-minded.
The 7-foot Hunter has a number of interested suitors, his agent, Mark Bartelstein, said.
"We have had a couple of good conversations with the 76ers," Bartelstein said. "The 76ers have done a lot of nice things. I'm sure Billy and I will continue to talk."

I really wonder how much interest the Sixers showed Hunter when he released last year, because I remember mentioning that they should pick him up, but the Suns got to him.

Dale Davis would be the obvious pick, but you've gotta wonder how much longer he has. If I was looking to the future I'd probably pick up Steven Hunter, but then again I'm not sure how good of a rebounder he is.

Re: Sixers spy a few free agent big men..
Steven Hunter would be the big man I want from this off season. I think we might have to offer him a long term mid level deal with our entire mid level exception to get him. I know that may seem a big steep for Steven Hunter, but I think it will be worth it especially considering some of the contracts that have already been given out to big men, for example Jerome James. I believe that Hunter is already better than James.

I'd go with Hunter for $3 mil per. The question though is how much he will improve the team.

Re: Sixers spy a few free agent big men..
I wouldn't say Hunter is better than Jerome James, James just doesn't love the game so he'll slack off, but I guarantee you in the last 15 games of James' contract he'll be better than Steven Hunter will be over the duration of whatever contract he signs.
The one thing about Hunter that scares me, is that he's too much like Dalembert. Low IQ player, has trouble catching the ball, gets in foul trouble. Main difference is Hunter is not a strong finisher around the basket.. I don't know how many people remember the game Vs the Celtics when Marcus Banks swatted his shot.
Dale Davis might be a better fit, since he could play alongside both Webber and Dalembert. I wouldn't want Hunter and Dalembert to play together, that would be a comedy of errors.

I never really watched much of Hunter, all I saw are the important numbers. 7 foot 1, 240 with the ability to run, jump, and block shots. That to me is where he is most valuable for our frontline since MJax can't do any of that.
Marshall would have been my first choice, but Hunter could give us some needed bulk off the bench. I just don't think Hunter is worth the MLE.
