The Philadelphia 76ers today released veteran guard Aaron McKie as they introduced the newest member of the team center Steve Hunter.
McKie is the second former Temple University Owl to be released by the Sixers this week. Marc Jackson was traded to the New Jersey Nets.
Team President Billy King said McKie will be designated as the team's amnesty player as allowed in the new collective bargaining agreement. The team still must pay his salary.
McKie had 10 NBA seasons but perhaps his biggest career highlight came in the 2000-01 season when he was selected the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year. The Sixers reached the NBA finals that year.
Acquired by Philadelphia on Dec. 18, 1997 from Detroit, McKie has scored 4,143 points in seven-plus seasons with the Sixers and ranks 30th all-time among the franchise's leading scorers, according to the Sixers.
He has averaged 7.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists per game.
He finished the 2003-04 season ranked fifth among the NBA leaders in three-point field goal percentage, ranked 19th in steals per turnover and 48th in steals per game.
McKie posted back-to-back triple-doubles during the 2000-01 season against Sacramento (12/30/00; 19 pts, 10 rebs, 14 assts) and Atlanta (1/3/01; 11 pts, 10 rebs, 11 assts), according to the his profile on nba.com.
In 2000, he became fifth player in NBA history to have more than 25 points, more than 10 assists and no turnovers in a playoff game, according to the NBA.
