76ers,cheeks plan to run half-court offense will suceed in it too
Sometimes it’s best to say when to give up.
Sometimes it’s best to throw in the towel and allow teams, if not players to surrender.
This isn’t what Billy King does.
This is what allows him to become one of the most successful General Manager in sports.
The reason the 76ers’ organization failed to match the Pistons’ players was easy, quick and simple.
The failure to offensively rebound the ball for one was critical.
The poor ability of coaching by Jim O’Brien was an obvious factor as well.
But just as interesting the 76ers’ inability to execute in the half-court set is another one of the threats that plagued ahead.
Billy King was quick to address these issues and more in the NBA draft,off-season and pretty much amazed all.
In the NBA draft the 76ers’ drafted Point Guard Louis Williams, Williams is one of the draft’s under-rated players, his greatest strength is his ability to protect the ball, which will benfit for the future starter.
He also comes into a situation where he gets to learn from 3 experienced players, a hall-of-fame player, and loyal assistants who have there name heavily linked to the NBA’s past before.
With a will-headed attitude, a roster that was built to succeed.
Williams has a personal video tape on hoe to become an NBA player.
In 4 seasons Williams grabbed 600+ Boards 140 of which offensively, such a talent for a point guard is remarkable, but also helpful.
It didn’t take King Long, okay it took him a legitmate amount of time, about 2 weeks to figure out the big man problem.
He traded Marc Jackson to the Nets’ for a 2006 conditional draft pick.
And he then used the money he got, and part of the MLE to sign C Steven Hunter.
Hunter’s quick Young and has amazing stamina, he should be a good reserve for the times to come, and I fully expect this guy to become a big part of our tandem in the front court.
There were and are however back-up plans.
Small Forward Deng Gai was brought up from the market, Gai whom recently though he’d make the NBA brought in a natural shot blocker, and a pretty nice scorer, of course the con to his game is that he’s from of the weaker conferences, and is not mentally tough.
Then there was Shaikic Randolph.
Randolph a 6’10 forward out of Duke was coached by Mike K, his ability to block the shot too is impressive, but unlike Gai is psychically and mentally active defensively and could be the captain of the 76ers,’ rookie squad this year.
One of the cons is that he didn’t see much playing time in college, not that’ll see some in Philadelphia, but when and if he does, will he be ready?
Overall 2 nice prospects and pick-ups, the drafting of Louis Williams also made it clear that King fully understands, that excution on the half-court, defense and protection of the basketball is crucial to any championship contending team.
When your Billy King and you look at your roster, you only have 3 free agents.
And those 3 free agents are the core of your chance slim chance at a future championship.
What do you do 76er fans?
Do you let that chance slip out the door, find your-selves with a team that has no depth at Center Position?
No quality starting forward, and yes if green wasn’t injuried a capable reserve guard who could provide some relief for Allen Iverson?
No there was no way that could happen, there was no way King could let it happen.
He didn’t want to pay the money that he did, hell he knew that type of money was the type needed to be dished out.
But what was the alternative?
Having a team that had no virtual depth in 3 cruical positions of the floor, and no future what-so-ever?
King didn’t like it then, and I am positivite he didn’t like it now, but it was better then being stuck with a team with no depth.
Or worse a team that couldn’t possibly acquire a future that was worth organizing.
Did I like it that we had to pay Dalembert 59 million dollars?
No not even the average 6’2 worker in the factorys should be getting thousands.
Yet one 8 inches taller can get up to millions if not trillions more then the worker putting more dedication and spirit then dalembert will ever in hard-working profession?
That’s Perposterous but it had to be done.
It had to be done in order to preserve a future.
To have a capable lineup needed to please the fans this year.
To prevent chemistry from being broken.
To prevent Maurice Cheeks to have second-guesses about joining this franchise.
There are somethings you regret having done, but personally me.
I regret having to pay 3 players so much.
But I don’t regret giving my team a chance to win a title some time some possible time.
The alternative was never achiving a world championship status.
Beez I hope you read this threat, I clearly acknowledge I didn’t like Billy King’s moves.
But at the time we didn’t have a choice.
Now we haven’t a choice to do a thing, except making the playoffs and winning it all!
