No Sportsnet for competitors..
Quote:
Philadelphia sports fans lost again. This time, it's not the Phillies or Eagles letting them down. It's the U.S. Senate.
An overhaul of the telecommunications industry being considered in Senate legislation originally included language that would have required cable companies to share local sports programming with competitors, such as satellite TV.
In other words, Comcast Corp. apparently would have been required to sell its SportsNet channel, which carries most games of the Phillies, Sixers and Flyers, to competitors.
But that part of the legislation, originally introduced by Sen. John Ensign, a Nevada Republican, has disappeared from the mammoth bill.
Aaron Saunders, a spokesman for the Senate Commerce Committee, which is overseeing the bill, said the provision was dropped because several members expressed concern about it. He would not name the members.
But senators did hear testimony in the last two weeks from Kyle McSlarrow, president of the National Cable and Telecommunications Association, and from Comcast executive David L. Cohen, advising the committee to drop the provision. McSlarrow said the proposed law was confusing. Cohen said it was a narrow issue that didn't merit federal attention.- Miriam Hill

This is the only reason I don't have DirecTV because you'll be an outsider to the sports scene even if you lived in the city. I don't see how this is legal, but with as much money as Comcast has you can make things like this happen.
Meanwhile Comcast Sportsnet Baltimore, and Comcast Sportsnet Chicago are available to people with other providers in the area. *smh*

Re: No Sportsnet for competitors..
That sucks. I have satellite tv and the only downfall is not getting the Sixers and Phillies. I still see plenty of games but it's just a big pain in the ***. It's ridiculous that Comcast is allowed to get away with this. Why would members of the Senate express concern over that, sounds like shady politics to me.

RCN? Where do you live? The only place Comcast-Philadelphia is absent is in the Philadelphia market (for dish services). I get Comcast-Baltimore and Comcast-Chicago, which blows.

What's even worse is that they're working on getting a complete monopoly on cable in the area, and the government is fine with it. My brother has DirecTV, and he always has to go to someone else's house to watch the home teams, he gets UPN57 so he can see some Phillies.

Yes, I'm in the same situation. UPN carries the Phils on the weekends, which isn't so bad but the Sixers games on UPN are few and far between. I can't believe that DirecTV isn't able to crack this problem. With DirecTV's competitive pricing I think that Comcast Sportsnet is one of the few reasons that Comcast Cable is still prominent in the area. It's beyond me why Senators took the course of action that they did, and it really pisses me off, as I'm sure it does for your brother. If you hear anything more please keep posting.

Re: No Sportsnet for competitors..
I live in Drexel Hill, Matt. I was actually pretty shocked when I saw there was a cable provider other than comcast in the Philadelphian area.
But, yeah, I get Comcast sportsnet on channel 25. i was pretty shocked about that too, i don't understand how it works.
