"Being here, it's a great cause. We'll have a basketball camp for high school kids, then do outreach work at night. In China last year, we spent time with kids who had lost their parents who had died of AIDS. I left there with really mixed feelings, thinking about all the great things we have and the other parts of the world we don't see.
"I remember there was one little boy who just wanted me to hold him, to hug him, to love him. They don't feel that [in their situations]. For 35 minutes, he wouldn't get off my lap. When you leave, your heart goes out to them. You like to think you're helping out, having a positive impact. They see us, they light up [even though] they don't really know us. We're just a bunch of tall guys."
The current traveling party includes former La Salle University star Rasual Butler, now with the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets; former Sixers Manute Bol and Dikembe Mutombo; former Sixers coach Randy Ayers; and NBA community ambassadors Bob Lanier and Jerome Williams.
