Sixers making rookies sweat it out

"We don't know how many we're going to carry just yet," Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks said yesterday after practice at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. "We've got a few days to make that decision, and we've got a few practices left to decide whether we're going to do it or not, and we'll go from there."

Now, I haven't watched this Steve Smith, but considering his hype on this board...

Smith, who is 6-8 and 235, also exhibited a knack for offensive rebounds and knocking down the midrange jumper. He averaged 4.8 points and 1.3 boards in 7.0 minutes and made half of his shots from the floor.
|
4.8 points per 7 minutes seems really good. Like, really, really good for an undrafted rookie. I don't understand why he wouldn't have been signed yet. Not to mention the other guy's 5.2 rbs in 13 minutes. THey seem better than half the bench.

Re: Sixers making rookies sweat it out
I think Mo Cheeks wants to check the mentatility of these young forwards, that's why they haven't been cut yet. If you take a look at the Philadelphia 76ers, we stress defense and poor ball movement. But inspite of those 2 things we did horribly last year, rebounding was definately at the top of the list:
Which one of these forwards can continue to do their job as the regular season opens up? Which one of these forwards are going to work hard and execute even better then what they had to secure their jobs. Which one of them will anticipate making the roster and have the energy to prove their anticipation was worth it? I'm not saying Steve Smith or Ivan Mcfarlin are gonna fix our rebounding problem. But to have bodies on the bench with the potential to rebound, isn't nessarily that half bad.

IMO, we don't need both Hunter and Mcfarlin backing up Dalembert. One of them has to go, probably Mcfarlin. I'll take Bobby Jones and Steven Smith, hopefully they can help our defensive woes.

Mcfarlin functions as a PF first, center far second, I believe. And we need big men far more than anything else.

I'll just pretend that you didn't project 6'8 (WITH SHOES ON) Ivan Mcfarlin as a 3rd-4th string center.

Re: Sixers making rookies sweat it out
Ivan Mcfarlin played at Oklahoma St with John Lucas Jr. (or the III), and Joey Graham. He has limited to no ball skills and limited offensive maneuvers. I wasn't sure of his size but he plays like a center (blocking shots, rebounding and such). I still dont think we need three skinny post players with him, Hunter and Dalembert. And I'll pretend that you, Sixersfanforlife, didn't call Hunter a impact player in your season preview.
