Billy King the #3 GM in Sports?
According to Forbes, he is!
A response from the Philadelphia Daily News:
Quote:
According to Forbes.com, GMs were graded on two things: performance vs. the performance of their predecessor, and payroll relative to the league median when compared to their predecessor. Because winning is more important than payroll, Forbes.com double-weighted winning percentage to penalize a GM who cut costs but also hurt his team's winning percentage. Did the GMs get extra points for best-dressed?
Bob Clarke was No. 27 - which makes us wonder even more about criteria and credibility. Pat Gillick was 39th (ditto on credibility). No Eagles GM was eligible because the survey was based on at least 3 years of pro service.
Forbes' list, its first and hopefully its last, is out of touch with reality around here. Everyone likes King, they just aren't sure he's the guy they want running the franchise, especially with a lottery pick (maybe two lottery picks) coming up.
King became GM in May 1998. Since then, his team is 360-314, including a trip to the
2001 Finals. In the last 2 years, a more plausible measuring stick, the Sixers are 60-72, and it took a four-game winning streak to get to 60. His personnel evaluations have been mediocre, to be kind. This season, they can't give tickets away.
That record doesn't make him the third-best GM in Philly, much less all of sports.
