Isiah Thomas flashed his trademark grin.
“It appears they like being coached now,” said Thomas, the Knicks coach, of the post-Allen Iverson 76ers. “They execute a game plan.”
The inference is that it wasn't the case for 10-plus seasons before the Dec. 19 trade in which Iverson went to the Nuggets for Andre Miller, Joe Smith and a pair of 2007 first-round picks.
Since Iverson's departure, the Sixers have relied much more heavily upon a balanced approach in which everybody is involved.
Andre Iguodala has benefited the most. He has shown he can do considerably more than shoot 3-pointers and dunk. Samuel Dalembert and Kyle Korver have also assumed more prominent roles.
Informed of Thomas' comment, Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks enjoyed a lengthy laugh.
“What do I say to that?” said Cheeks prior to yesterday's game against the Knicks. “Our guys are going out on the floor and doing the things we've been asking them to do. The best part is they've had some success out of it and people have noticed. When you have some success, people keep trying to do it.”
