DALLAS - The fight the 76ers had shown in their first five games returned last night, but attrition eventually did them in.

After playing a sparkling first half and taking a seven-point lead, the Sixers wore down during a 99-84 loss to the Dallas Mavericks in front of a crowd of 19,875, the 237th consecutive sellout at American Airlines Center.

Leading by eight points after three quarters, the Mavs broke the game open in the fourth and raced to a 21-point lead.

"I feel like the second half, I didn't recognize us out there," said Sixers center Samuel Dalembert, who finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. "I always give a lot of credit to this team, but we were a complete opposite team. They got up by eight points, and we didn't respond enough."

The enviable depth of Dallas (5-2) eventually wore down the Sixers, who are 2-5 and enter tonight's game at New Orleans on a three-game losing streak.

"No doubt the depth hurt us," Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "They not only rotate fresh guys, but great players come in."

Dallas' bench outscored the Sixers' reserves, 48-23.

The Mavericks' starters and reserves picked it up significantly in the second half.

"Coach [Avery Johnson] knows we are a veteran team, and we knew what we had to do to turn the energy up," said Jason Terry, who scored 25 points off the bench, including 21 in the second half. "We got it out of us in the third quarter, and we pushed on to victory."
