Time For Sam To Beef Up

Sixers Notes | Ayers wants Dalembert to beef up
By Joe Juliano
Inquirer Staff Writer
WASHINGTON - Samuel Dalembert continues to grow in basketball ability and awareness for the 76ers, and coach Randy Ayers is eager to see him grow in strength with some work in the weight room.
At a skinny 6-foot-11, Dalembert, the Sixers' backup center, can be moved around under the boards, but that can be remedied if he builds himself up.
"He's not very strong in his hips and his back," Ayers said last night. "When he gets straight up and down, it's easy to displace him. That's why we've really got to get him in the weight room the rest of this year and in the off-season, to get his midsection a lot stronger so he can push back."
Still, Dalembert is not doing badly. He totaled 21 points, 18 rebounds and 7 blocked shots in the Sixers' victories over the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night and the New Jersey Nets on Friday night.
"He's given us some positive minutes," Ayers said. "He just changes the dynamics on the court. If he's in position, normally, he's going to make a positive play."
Dalembert grabbed 10 rebounds, tying his season high, on Friday. It was the fourth time this season that he had pulled down 10, but Ayers said that it was the best he had looked as a rebounder.
"He got some very good rebounds in traffic," the coach said.

I agree he needs strength, but at the same time you dont want him to put on weight thats going to take away his explosiveness and that quickness to do what he does best

He seems to be getting the tenacity to be a very good rebounder, he just needs to keep at it.

All along, all I ever wanted out of him is rebounding and defense. Anything else is frosting on my cake.

Slowly but surely I want to see a little more out of Dalembert because hes finally learning the game. Not to much responsibility but a few more wrinkles from him

I think Beez is right on this one. A learning process for a pretty good athlete. Coleman just can't be counted on at his age and injury level. Dalembert/Jackson (upon return) will have to log the minutes. It is not a horrible situation, but not a championship one.

He's really just getting his first opportunity.. He's the perfect 5, for the Sixers IMO.. I guess time will tell though.

Definitiley not. He cant really put the ball on the floor as of yet. Hes playing very well as our Center. I dont like him at the PF. There are more weapons in the league at the PF then there are at Center
