Thumbs up Coleman not coming back..

Quote:
Despite having two years remaining on his contract, 76ers power forward Derrick Coleman essentially has been told by General Manager Billy King and new coach Jim O'Brien he won't be back.
LINK

Not bad news at all, in the world of Philly sports. The Eagles wrap up a successful mini-camp, the Flyers trounce the Leafs, and the Phillies win a 14 inning game on a bases loaded walk.. and now this, the best news of them all, Derrick Coleman most likely won't be back.

Last season, Derrick Coleman was a part of the mad spending spree Billy King had once he got his hands on Ed Snider's checkbook. Despite the disputes over Iverson's bench refusal, Amal McCaskill's noted lack of talent, the Derrick Coleman signing stood out as the worst move by the franchise since the signing of Greg Buckner.

Coleman, the poster boy of how not to approach a career in basketball, one day had all the talent in the world and could've been the guy to revolutionize the power forward position.. now? Now Derrick Coleman accomplished his goal of getting his last contract, on two dead knees that prevents him from jumping over the Sunday edition of the Inquirer.

Personally DC, take no offense, but I don't know of any moistened eyes that'll be left with your departure.. unless they'll be tears of joy, in that case there will be plenty.

Now, how do you move Coleman? One way, and that is to offer Charlotte $3 million in cash to take him off our hands, so we can wave him. That is, unless you know of a team who might be interested...

Nah, didn't think so.

Great news.

So you guys think there's absolutely no chance we can get something for him?

One on one, even one on two, when the guy they call the Answer is on a one-way trip to the basket, you better just foul him. People can hate all day about the number of shot attempts. But, damn, give him props for even getting them up. He's small enough to have every shot contested. That 39% shooting sounds terrible to the regular reader, but have you seen these NBA players lately?"

If there was someway we could get something for Coleman, I'm sure the Sixers would go for it, even if it was a lump of coal. That being said, I'm afraid of what we might have to give up alongside Derrick to get something equally bad/or worse.

Great news.

Believe it or not I think we could get a little something for him from other East teams that need front court size.

I'm not too sure, but doesn't Coleman have an expiring contract next season? Would that be valuable in a trade?

He has two more seasons left I believe. Less valuable, but at least it isn't a huge and horrible contract.

Coleman's next two seasons are at 4.5 million and 5 million a year. Granted, that is overpaying for sure, but it isn't as bad as many of teh contracts around the league now. If only Coleman could have played like he did near the end of last year, but alas, Coleman can only play like that in a contract year.

I don't care if Im the only guy here who will be missing Derrick.

I don't care what people say about him, the man can play the game of basketball, and played very well this season. Even though he had sore knees, the man hustled and attacked the glass. Derrick is a great guy, and has a great passion for the game. I will really miss the DC.

Better than these bums we have in Eric Snow and Aaaron "overpaid" Mckie.

I don't know man, but I definitely have to say you're alone here. Aaron McKie and Eric Snow contributed a lot more this season than Coleman. Coleman couldn't jump over a sunday paper five years ago, now he's barely clearing the Inquirer's sports page.

Coleman just can't give much of anything to a team anymore. His knees are to the point where he can't run the court (one time he was clocked in at 15 seconds, getting from one side of the court to another). I have a hard time feeling sorry for Coleman, he might be a great guy off the court, but on the court he wasted all his talent. He was supposed to be the player who redefined the Power Forward position.

When AI got injured, Snow improved his game, and McKie played better than he did in the prior season. Of course that's not saying much for McKie. It's hard to believe he's about the same age as Eddie Jones, since Eddie can still play, and Aaron can barely move. There was one game earlier this year where McKie was making Calbert Chaney look like MJ in his prime, and when he was guarding Steve Smith? OH BOY!

Derrick Coleman? Sorry, but there appears to be no room for him on the Good Ship O'Brien (even if the new coach, a model of decorum, didn't say so directly). Perhaps there's a weight limit.
Quote:
He has already spoken with all the players on the current roster — everyone except Coleman and veteran guard Greg Buckner. While O'Brien said no decision has been made about Coleman, a buyout of the last two years of his contract seems likely.
LINK

Now this is interesting, if they're going to buy out Coleman's contract maybe they offer Charlotte the $3 million to take Buckner? That's the only reason, I see for O'Brien not to meet with Buckner at all. Getting rid of Buckner and Coleman in the same offseason would be an outstanding feat. We would still have some cap problems, but things would look a lot brighter.

If the 76ers get rid of Coleman who will they have up front. But if the Coach is getting some bigger bodies up front forget Coleman he is ready to retire. I mean he does no good for Philly.
