AZ Republic: Draft spurs rumors of Marion deal (says Suns deny Sonics rumor)
It looks like we denied that Sonics rumor, but you never know. I won't feel relieved till maybe after the draft haha.

There could be several trades during Wednesday's NBA draft, and if the rumor mill were gospel, Suns All-Star Shawn Marion would be involved in each one.
The annual Marion trade rumor season has opened, especially with the Suns openly wishing they could move up in the draft to get an impact rookie rather than prospects with the 21st and 27th picks.
In recent days, reports have mentioned talk of a deal sending Marion to Chicago for Tyson Chandler and the Bulls' No. 2 pick, according to the (Racine, Wis.) Journal Times, and the "very close" conclusion of a deal sending Marion to Seattle, possibly with Leandro Barbosa, for Rashard Lewis, Danny Fortson and a swap of two first-round picks (according to draftexpress.com). Seattle sits at No. 10 in the draft.
Suns officials deny the reports, but there is no denying the payroll predicament.
Phoenix's team payroll would be at about $61 million for next season without re-signing free agent Tim Thomas. The luxury tax threshold, a dollar-for-dollar penalty that Managing Partner Robert Sarver would prefer not to cross, is projected to be about $63 million next year. A season later (2007-08), long-term contract extensions for Barbosa and Boris Diaw could start and drive the payroll up at least $12 million.
As Phoenix's top-paid player, Marion would make $15.1 million, $16.4 million and $17.2 million in the next three seasons. Lewis makes $16 million less over those three years.
At season's end, Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said he would listen to offers but that Marion would stay. That remains likely.

To add to this..
people on real GM mentioned they heard VP David Griffin on local TV this morning say that they're keeping the core together, and will make minor changes on the bench for better depth. Also, he said (obviously) we're looking to move up in the draft.

draft express is saying that the deal still has legs and could be just them seeing what deals are out there or contingent on what players are there. I hope they're wrong though.

What do you guys want to do? WE HAVE TO shed some payroll, or not resign Diaw and Barbosa; it's simple as that. I don't want to trade Marion either, but something has to give. There's only one team above the luxary tax threashold, Sarver won't and probably shouldn't be expected to make Phoenix the second.

Cap is at 63 mill for this coming yr. We're at 61 million
So, say we trade Marion for Lewis, Lewis walks next yr with his option, we're in the same boat. We traded Barbosa and Marion for just 10th pick. Fortson doesn't count haha. Not to mention Marion > Lewis in everything but posting up and 3 point shooting. Diaw also could not play well this yr and we traded Marion? Especially, with Amare coming off injury? Makes no sense. And without Marion things will be a lot harder. Plays 40 mins, avgs 20/12, guards 1st or 2nd best player, gets steals and blocks. Not to mention 11 or 12 rebounds a game, where we get killed on a nightly basis in that area already. It would spread around without him but it'd end up worse without someone working.
Sarver said he knows one day he'll have to pay luxary tax, but doesn't think we can do it all the time. I'm pretty sure there is more than 1 team paying it though. And if he wants to win, he better.

Is there a chance we can sign TT for 1 million for 1 year?
Then we would be at 62 mill next year. I think we need TT for experience and depth.

He's gonna want Mid level exception. And we'd still have to pay draft picks which would push it close as it is. Besides that, with KT, Amare, Marion, Diaw, and possibly of drafting another front court player, not enough room.
Man with all this trade talk, I've repeated myself about 10 million times. It's annoying to have to say the same things about why we shouldn't trade him and why it makes no sense haha. No offense to anyone

If you read my post you'll see I never advocated trading Marion for Lewis. I'm fully aware of how much Shawn brings to the table and how hard it'd be to replace. I simply said something has to give. If that something is keeping Marion and maybe not Diaw and Barbosa then so be it. I'm all for keeping Marion, but it'll mean losing salary in other (Diaw, Barbosa, Thomas) areas. I don't recall Sarver saying he knows he'll pay the luxary tax someday, I remember him very reluctantly saying he might. Big differance.
I'm pretty sure only the Knicks are above the luxary tax threashold, I might be wrong but I don't think I am.

Oh, I know you're not advocating but I just named the negative things about the trade and why it doesn't work for us haha. Even with that said, we're fine for this yr if the numbers work out right. Next yr may be the yr it actually happens though. I want at least one yr with this group all healthy.
I posted an article not too long ago where it the title was "Sarver may not be cheap after all?" or something of that nature, where he mentioned the comments I said.

Trade Kurt Thomas and Leandro Barbosa instead for Sene, Patrick O'Bryant or Hilton Armostrong

Re: AZ Republic: Draft spurs rumors of Marion deal (says Suns deny Sonics rumor)
Honestly, our best avenues as far as getting rid of cap would be to shed the cap of Kurt Thomas and James Jones for a young big man that could put in 15-25 minutes a game, or a young point guard that could do the same, and a pick put in there to keep it even for the Suns as far as acquiring some talent.
