Suns fans figure to get their first regular-season look at 6-foot-3 rookie point guard Leandro Barbosa tonight when the Atlanta Hawks visit America West Arena.
Barbosa returned Tuesday from Brazil, where he has been visiting his terminally ill father in a hospice, and practiced with the team.
"The guys are happy to see him," Suns coach Frank Johnson said. "They certainly understand the situation he has been going through. It's a very, very personal and tough situation. I wasn't expecting him back right now.
"We told him to come back only when he was ready. It was basically a situation where he had to take care of stuff at home, and say goodbye to his father."
Johnson said he plans to give Barbosa playing time tonight.
Finally, we are going to see some action. I heard that his father was sick, but I had no idea he was at terminal situation. I hope he handles the situation well.
He played more last night: 12 minutes and scored 7 points. I couldn't watch the game but looking at the box-score it's clear that he played some time with Marbury on the court.
