I'll go with Carmelo. I just think he's all-around the better leader and player, but I'm not 100% sure. I'd love to see Carmelo on OKC, and Durant on Denver. That would be interesting.
I'll take Durant. Carmelo has never really realized his incredible potential in the post. Instead, he wastes a lot of time playing his more mediocre perimeter game. Durant scores so much more quickly and efficiently, I'd rather have him on my team.

Wow looking at their stats its almost a wash all the way through however Durant is surprisingly putting up better %'s from FG, 3, and FT albeit the differences are pretty small. PER-wise there's only a .03 difference and they're sitting at the number 6-7 spot on the chart.
I'll go with Durant. Melo has a reputation of not showing up in the playoffs and Durant attacks and scores at the rim better (.673% for Durant to .561% for Melo for this season @ http://www.nba.com/hotspots/ ). Durant also is a better rebounder and playing on a team with far less luxuries than Anthony's - Chauncey could make Durant's great stats even better.
"I remember one time Kevin Garnett was mushing him, and shoving him in the face; and Tim Duncan didn't do anything, he didn't react. He just kicked Kevin Garnett's ass, and won the damn championship. You know what I'm sayin'? That's gangsta. Everybody can show emotion, dunk on somebody, scream and be real cocky; but Tim Duncan is a ... he's a pimp."
Ignoring potential this is a wash. Of course that's not reality. Durant is really far ahead of where Melo was at the same stage in his career. He's got holes in his game, but it's stuff he could definitely work upon if he wants to become a truly great player. I have a very difficult time seeing how anyone could say one was indisputably better than the other at this moment, but Durant is indisputably younger than Melo and he has a greater upside if he decides to exploit it fully.
You can't use 'Melo not showing up in the play-offs as an argument against a dude who's never even been in the play-offs, surely?
Of course its assuming that Durant performs better, as-is Melo's playoffs history is to be desired. He's also more prone to being a headcase and committing stupid fouls.

This would be a brilliant question if Durant continues to lead OKC to a play-off spot, I think they can nick the 7th spot, which would mean a Melo/Durant series.
Lebron is such a joke. He saw how much everyone loved Dwight and Nate's routine in the dunk contest and had to horn in on it and announce 364 days early how he would participate and get the spotlight on him. Then he wips it all up in a frenzy and backs out like a chump. I've been getting tired of LeBron's junk for a while now. This is just another reason to see this guy as a chump. Great ballplayer, insane talent, total chick.

Lebron is breaking up with Cleveland on national TV.
So with Durant and the Thunder being on a tear does anyone want to change their answer?
About a month ago, I might have said Melo. But this recent streak of Durant scoring 25+ ppg, coupled with OKC currently being the hottest team in the league right now - I gotta go with Durant.
Melo is stronger, but Durant is longer. Their skill sets are very close. Both are the corner stones of their respective franchises. Both came into the league after one year in college.
So, I think the deciding factor would be off-the-court issues. So far, Durant has been squeaky clean - while Melo has had some run-ins. For me, that translates into Durant being more reliable.
When the basketball side of the argument is so close - I think you have to look at other issues to make a decision. Give me Durant....
