hm i've never heard that as the "definitive" meaning of rap. i thought the word rap was just slang for talking in the african american community back in the day. either way, that is an interesting take on it. but to the issue more, to me "advanced" implies superior in some way. certainly you could argue that a sonnet is more advanced than a homeric epic in a historical sense or something, but the way Chan was phrasing it didn't strike me like that. The way he was saying it rang to me more like

this is just a sore subject for me in general, because people slag off on poetry so much these days. and generally when people talk about poetry they talk about music lyrics, which i consider to be sometimes poetic but not the same as poetry. mainly what i see is an entire world that people don't care to get acquainted with, so they automatically presume that something more mainstream in the culture, in this case, song lyrics, is automatically superior. tiks me off.
