Re: Preference when writing poetry?

I used to write poetry when I was younger, and I usually did it within a set of rules.

Re: Preference when writing poetry?

I usually go by a set syllable set up, around 10-12. Flows better.

I enjoy rhyming poetry, but being contrary by nature rebel when it's required of me.

Re: Preference when writing poetry?

depends on my mood. i guess i prefer more "freestyle" than structured but even when i am going in a freestyle sort of mode i try to impose certain limits & rules on what i am doing.

Re: Preference when writing poetry?

My poems have to rhyme and have to have a certain amount of syllables. Otherwise, it just seems awkward and doesn't draw attention to readers. I know I find it harder to read a poem that doesn't rhyme, I don't know why though.

When I took a poetry class a few semesters ago we had to memorize and recite poems of our choosing. The people who chose rhyming poems had an easy time reciting them but others like me who didn't pick rhyming poems had a very difficult time reciting them even if they were smaller.

Re: Preference when writing poetry?

Yeah, I don't doubt that the students who had to recite poems that rhymed had an easier time memorizing/reciting them, but I honestly think they're easier to write too. Whenever I try to write a poem that doesn't rhyme, I usually end up becoming self conscious because I don't know how the rhythm would sound, or if it even would be considered a poem. I think the most fun I've ever had writing a poem was from a sestina that I had to write just a few weeks back. I was surprised how fun that was to write.

Re: Preference when writing poetry?

I like rules. Not necessarily rules dictating the amount of syllables per verse, but you've got to rock the parallel structure.

Re: Preference when writing poetry?

No real structure, I like my poem to just freestyle its way to an end which sometimes involve rhyme schemes but usually just meanders into borderline wacko . I used to write a whole load and haven't penned anything in the longest time.

I may actually get down to writing some stuff this summer. I think I may even have a few pieces I did on this board somewhere.. I may go look for them
