Why would you not support local farmers. They've been taking a beating for years.

Having a nations food system in the hands of a few people is a really really bad idea. Only 1% of Americans list farming as an occupation in the United States. There are 5 or 6 companies that run the globalized food supply. This is bad.

Processed foods are one of the main factors leading to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity, etc...wonder what kind of improvements an affordable local food economy would have on healthcare costs?

Yep. The more they "make" food, the worse shape America becomes.

Not to mention you know where your moneys going when you buy local produce.

How do you define "third world"? I mean, by traditional definitions the Swiss and the Austrians are third world - but they are also wealthy nations. Third world means non-allied with the capitalists nor the communists. :P

Depends on the job, but yea.

The issue here is way more people going to college than necessary. So now you've got a country flooded with post secondary grads resorting to applying to jobs that normally only required a highschool education.

Kinda/sorta. It meant not aligned with the Nato or Soviet blocs. Prior to the asinine FATCAT law Switzerland was überkapitalizt.

You should probably realize that something being profitable almost 100 years ago isn't a sure fire good comparison EH.

I wouldn't put the time gap as much as the societal gap to blame for the fact that it can't be profitable today. Willingness and wherewithal go a long ways, but at the same time our culture wouldn't allow it today. Everybody has a driver's license. Even in a place like New York, with a great rail system as a perfectly valid excuse, not having a license to drive is seen as a bad thing. The social stigma is a constant issue, you hear more "well what's wrong? why not?" than "good for you, saving the environment and your money!" I went without a car for three years because I simply wasn't comfortable driving (I was at fault only once, but managed to have 5 cars in a 1.5 year span fall apart or get wrecked on me) and I heard it constantly.

Nobody is going to go to purely using a rail system because if you don't have a license and a car, you're looked down upon. And if you have a license and a car you're going to use it.
