Boy Scouts: We're keeping policy banning gays

Quote:
The Boy Scouts of America will keep their controversial policy banning gay scouts and leaders after a confidential two-year review, the organization said Tuesday.

The announcement comes amid a stepped-up campaign from activist groups urging an end to the membership guidelines.

The Boy Scouts convened a committee of 11 volunteers and professional leaders to decide whether the policy was still in the organization’s best interests after a resolution was put forward to reconsider it, the private group said in a statement that was first reported by The Associated Press. The nearly two-year-long review began in 2010.

They reached a unanimous consensus that it was the "best policy" for the BSA, Scouts' spokesman Deron Smith said in an email. That conclusion was shared at a February board meeting and recently reviewed by the officers of the board, he said.

“The committee included a diversity of perspectives and opinions. The review included forthright and candid conversation and extensive research and evaluations -- both from within Scouting and from outside the organization. The committee’s work and conclusion is that this policy reflects the beliefs and perspectives of the BSA’s members, thereby allowing Scouting to remain focused on its mission and the work it is doing to serve more youth,” the statement said.

The review was conducted confidentially "to allow the committee to make the best decision for the organization," Smith said.

Serious question, who joins the Boy Scouts in 2012? I thought it was idiotic in the early 90s and didn't do it.

Re: Boy Scouts: We're keeping policy banning gays

This is their own business. It is probably the wisest course of action for them considering that much of their support comes from Churches and people who would not want their sons out in the woods with homosexuals. The people who would be upset about this don't matter as much as the people who'd be upset by the opposite course of action.

Re: Boy Scouts: We're keeping policy banning gays

Of course this won't actually stop gay people from being scout masters... just stop openly gay people from being scout masters.

I won't argue the legal point that the Boy Scouts are a private organization that can do what they want (though there is no real equivalent to the Boy Scouts that I'm aware of) but **** the BSoA, bigots.

Jesus, my parents had to force me to go to Cub Scouts back in the 70s. Once it came time for the Boy Scouts I gladly dropped out.

I always thought it was the lamest thing in the entire world. People talk about how incredible being an eagle scout looks on a resume or whatever, and that's fine, but the few boy scouts that went to high school with me were ****ing weirdos. Any teenage boy that wants to dress up in little uniforms and play woodland critter games with a bunch of other socially awkward freaks is a weirdo.

Thinking homosexuality is wrong does notmake you any more of a bigot than thinking people opposed to it are wrong.

That makes no sense.

Thinking blacks are inferior does not make you any more of a racist than thinking white supremacists are wrong.

Re: Boy Scouts: We're keeping policy banning gays

People can see homosexuality as a moral failure. A lot of people think it is a sin. You should go talk to some Baptists or pretty much anyone who reads the Bible and takes it literally.

Slavery is condoned in the Bible too. People who abide by 2000 (+++++++ because Jesus doesn't mention gays) year old desert morals without any question are idiotic.

Re: Boy Scouts: We're keeping policy banning gays

You are entitled to your opinion and other people are not? I think there is a basic failing to your logic. I personally don't care about gay people so long as they leave me alone. I can't stand people who hate people because they are gay, but I firmly believe that people have a right to their own sense of morality. You must think everyone is entitled to your sense of morality.

They're completely entitled to their opinions, but I get to remind them that they are bigoted opinions.

Keeping in mind I had no interest in being a scout after about the 4th grade... I will state that you have the Boy Scout level of things completely wrong. Obviously they do survival and camping events. But the primary focus is on community service and skill building. Maybe it is just my background doing education in an outdoor setting teaching ecology over the past few years - but the skills and talents of the few people I've worked with that were boy scouts were incredibly valuable. The ones that aren't "socially awkward freaks" take a lot of real world skills and have a level of networking ability that comes very naturally to them.

I regret not sticking with it, really. I had too little interest in anything other than sports when I was a kid, I'd rather go run or play basketball and football than go to a scout meeting. It could have benefitted me far more than doing those things did.

Re: Boy Scouts: We're keeping policy banning gays

I bet I win the weirdest boy scout experience (without being gay) award: I had two women for boy scout leaders, my best friend's mom and my mom. The other cub scout group in the small town we lived in was real tight on their shit. All marching in formation and learning what part of the scenery was edible, making fires and what not. We were always at my house or my friends moms house just having after school free time. One of the kids refused to wear the uniform and was always in a tie dyed shirt. One day we are playing Red Rover and my mom and my best friend are linked together. It's my mom's turn to call. She looks over at my friend and they somehow come to a mutual agreement to hold on tight and not let any mother****er pass no matter what or something. My mom calls out tie dyed shirt kid to come over and he comes prancing across and gets closelined and is unconscious on the ground for around 10 seconds.

Yeah I just broke an oath.
