Reid puts GOP in a bind over Romney's taxes

Quote:
Washington (CNN) -- Republican sources say they're in a Catch-22 situation on how to reply to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's claims that GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney went 10 years without paying taxes.

They understand that they're taking Reid's bait and that responding to his unsubstantiated claims against Romney keeps alive the issue of Romney's refusing to release his tax returns.

Still, these GOP sources say they feel that if they do not respond to such a serious charge from such a high-ranking Democrat, it will look like a tacit admission Reid is right.

Republicans stepped up attempts to undermine Reid's unsubstantiated allegations Monday, saying Reid and other Democrats' accusations are being orchestrated by President Barack Obama's campaign -- specifically his senior campaign adviser, David Axelrod.

To that end, Republican National Committee spokesman Sean Spicer noted that Axelrod visited Senate Democrats for their weekly lunch last Tuesday. Later that afternoon, a Huffington Post story was published with Reid's allegations about the presumptive GOP nominee not paying any taxes.

"You've got to wonder if the so-called source is Axelrod himself," Spicer said. "Hours after meeting with Axelrod, Reid comes out and makes baseless accusations?"

Axelrod flatly denied that allegation, calling it "completely false" and saying he "never had any such discussion."

"Instead of pointing fingers in every direction, they can put the whole matter to rest by simply observing the standard George Romney and a generation of candidates have set by releasing the returns," Axelrod said.

In a separate article posted Monday, the Huffington Post reported that it interviewed Reid days before Axelrod's visit, making any influence from the top Obama official's Capitol Hill visit impossible.

By trying to tie Reid's remarks to the Obama campaign, Republicans are trying to hit Democrats where it could hurt most: the president's credibility.

We know the story's horsepuckey because the IRS is pretty ruthless at collecting from high profile people.

How do you calculate wealth hidden in corporations that are separate from Romney? There are probably hundreds of millions hidden from the public

Re: Reid puts GOP in a bind over Romney's taxes

It is obvious that Reid is talking out of his ass, but on the other hand Romney would release these documents if there was nothing in them that would hurt him. Most likely if they were released they would show that Romney has been paying an extremely low tax rate, much lower than the people who will decide the election.

Romney wants to focus on the fact that he's not Obama and for that reason it does not matter if he does not stand for anything except Mitt Romney. Whole time he's probably telling all his rich buddies to lay off workers because that is all he has going for him.

^ This

If he didn't have something to hide he would have no problem in releasing those returns. Other candidates (Obama included) haven't had an issue in releasing their tax returns. Heck, even Mitt's dear old dad released 12 years worth when he ran for president.

A bind? The Democrats pathetic record since they came to power is a bind. This is just bs from Harry in an attempt to divert attention from their abysmal failure as a party.

One, that wasn't Reid's accusation. In the second the days of secret bank accounts are done, there are a handful of countries left that are defying the US and the EU on this. And Switzerland ain't one of them. (The US' ill thought out FATCAT law has resulted in thousands of people that happily lived and worked abroad being sent home because companies no longer want the paperwork burden of employing them or serving their bank needs.)

That doesn't answer my question as to how the IRS is supposed to find out about Romney's off shore income if it does exist.

Re: Reid puts GOP in a bind over Romney's taxes

Foreign banks have been reporting the holdings of American citizens for a couple of years now. By next year pretty much all Swiss banks will have closed out all the accounts from Americans so as to avoid the burdens imposed by the idiotic FATCAT regulations. This has made life extremely difficult on the American employees of the UN and various international NGOs based there. The cartoon caricature is long dead. The few places left that aren't complying are more targeted at the holdings of people in the drug trade as they aren't in the best business areas (Lichtenstein is the one exception to this).

So it would make sense that Romney would have $3 million in a Swiss account in 2010, but not in 2011.

Yeah, I have a friend in that bind, he lives and works in Straussbourg, while his wife's a freelance writer/editor that does most of her work for English language publications in Switzerland, but her bank has let her know that her account's being closed as of the end of the year as the official policy is to end all business with American customers then.

you still have to pay taxes on money held in offshore accounts. it is part of the tax code. the irs only has to demand the banks hand over the info and i'd bet all the tea in china they have.
no way in hell a high profile guy like romney is going to escape paying his taxes ESPECIALLY with obama. this is smoke and mirrors basically.
if i were romney, i'd make a public deal:
i release another 5 years or so of returns and obama releases his college transcripts from columbia and harvard so we can all see how well he really did and what courses he took. as some have said with romney and his returns, if obama is really as smart as he has been talked about by the adoring mainstream media, he would have no problem releasing them. he (obama) is the only candidate or president i can recall in modern times who has never done so. what is he hiding?
bottom line is this- back in 2004, the democrats had sen. john kerry running for office ( a man whose wealth rivals romney's) and the media NEVER made a stink over it. heck, kerry even moved his yacht so he could avoid paying Massachusetts taxes on it.

Re: Reid puts GOP in a bind over Romney's taxes

I remember media talking about Kerry's wealth. I also remember Republicans making a deal about how he married into most of it. Kerry is wealthy by himself, but his wife blows him out of the water. Romney would be the wealthiest president of all time by raw numbers. Some early president such as Washington or Jefferson might rival his wealth if adjusted for inflation and put against the average American wage for the day. The income inequality in this country is the highest its been probably ever and Romney is in that 1%.

Re: Reid puts GOP in a bind over Romney's taxes

Also since Obama belongs to the new "majority minority" of Americans, if Romney were elected, he could be the first President to not look anything like his majority voting constituency. I view the real difference between he and American population to be the wealth differential, but I could see it having repercussions in racial harmony, maybe more so than Obama's administration.
