re: Diplomatic furry as Ecuador grants asylum to WikiLeaks founder Assange
WHY? that's what she claimed - and both women have claimed that he was aggressive to the point of being predatory
but meanwhile we're all worried about him being extradited to a completely different country (the US) that hasnt filed any charges and hasnt made any extradition claims because once he's in Sweden he'll be more vulnerable to a supposed US claim than he is while he is in the UK? is there a country in the world in closer cahoots with us than the UK? is there anyone even in the same neighborhood? if the US wanted him, they'd have him right now occam's razor, please |

Re: Diplomatic furry as Ecuador grants asylum to WikiLeaks founder Assange
As a Commonwealth Citizen Assange has legal rights in the UK that he doesn't have in Sweden.

Re: Diplomatic furry as Ecuador grants asylum to WikiLeaks founder Assange
those rights arent standing in the way of him being extradited to another country right now (sweden) which is why he sought asylum in the ecuadorian embassy in the first place (and not, while we're at it, the australian one)

re: US documents reportedly refer to Assange, WikiLeaks as 'enemy'
The Swedish aren't threatening trial by military tribunal as an enemy combatant for being a journalist. Put another way, it's a heck of a lot easier for the authorities to extradite him on a felony charge to Sweden than a political one to the US.

re: US documents reportedly refer to Assange, WikiLeaks as 'enemy'
How is that even relevant? He isn't wanted for anything in the US. In all likelihood he isn't going to be charged with any crimes in the US because it is too big of a mess and would just result in a big waste of time. Anyone who thinks this through would have to conclude that it's all a big smokescreen. Unless you think this guy is delusional or a paranoid schizophrenic none of the defense you are making are in any way logical. The United States government almost certainly has no intention of trying to extradite this guy. It is simply going to make him a martyr to the fruitcake brigade without accomplishing anything.
No one here has yet explained how or why we extradite him. Why is that?

and how the heck does him going to sweden change anything about the US extradition concerns you're expressing? same shit storm, less pliable government to work with etc - makes it less likely Last edited by e-monk; 08-25-2012 at 11:07 AM. |

On the other hand, extradition on a felony charge to Sweden is rather straightforward, and much much easier to accomplish than a direct extradition to the US. And once in Sweden Assange's status as a Commonwealth Citizen no longer affords him any protection. And even if he's ultimately cleared (and let's be honest here, given that the original prosecutor refused to touch the case on the grounds that the witness statements showed no evidence of a crime, followed by a second interview and a destruction of the original statements this is a likely result), he will be immediately deported from Sweden, and if the US puts in an extradition claim it's likely to be quickly honored by Sweden.
