US documents reportedly refer to Assange, WikiLeaks as 'enemy'

Quote:
Updated at 8:52 a.m. ET: LONDON -- Ecuador granted asylum to Julian Assange on Thursday, expressing fury at a threat by Britain to seize the WikiLeaks founder at its London embassy.
Ricardo Patino, the Ecuadorean foreign minister, told a news conference in Quito it was upholding international law by granting asylum to Assange.

Britain earlier said it would it would revoke the diplomatic status of Quito's embassy in west London -- where Assange has been holed up since June 19 -- in order to seize Assange irrespective of the asylum decision.

Patino expressed fury at Britain’s earlier threat to arrest Assange, saying it was a direct threat to the Ecuador’s sovereignty.

The former Australian hacker, who incensed American government officials by publishing thousands of secret U.S. diplomatic cables and Iraq and Afghan war dispatches in 2010, sought refuge in the embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden over assault and rape claims, which he denies. He exhausted all appeals after a 17-month legal battle.

"Judicial evidence clearly demonstrates that given an extradition to the United States of America, Mr. Assange would not have a fair trial, he could be judged by special or military courts, and it is not unlikely to believe he would be treated in a cruel and degrading way, that he would receive a life sentence or death penalty, with which his human rights would not be respected," Patino said.

I haven't seen much legitimate support for any of his contentions, just a lot of rambling about grand juries, Bradley Manning, or the 1917 Espionage Act, which was superseded 65 years ago itself...

The Swedish connection is a bit peculiar, and I'm not sure I like it, but a lot of the mutterings of gloom and doom surrounding Assange are just plain ridiculous.

I do know Patino will do anything to buck the US system...Like most of the countries in South America this decade.

^ True enough... Ecuador is in favor of Iran's nuclear program to boot - but it feels like even South American countries without ties to Iran haven't seen eye to eye with the US all that much recently

Some interesting thoughts from russian source:

Quote:
... As for the UK authorities, the whole Assange case clearly demonstrates, first, their utmost servility to the Big Transatlantic Brother, and second, once again shows their adherence to the notorious principle of double standards, and "our SOB". Today's total neglect of the Vienna Convention forces one to remember the not so distant cases of Chechen terrorist Akhmed Zakayev and one of the main sponsors of the above terrorism Boris Berezovsky who were granted political asylum despite numerous extradition requests addressed to the British authorities by Russian prosecutors.

Or look at the hypocrisy surrounding the case of three Russian sluts who instantly became front-page celebrities throughout the Western world. The only question that will definitely be left unanswered is why the Western media are so keen to demand the right for free speech for them and deny the same right for Julian Assange?...

gee that 'Russian sluts' bit isnt a red flag regarding your source or anything is it? fyi zakayev is the prime minister of the unrecognized country of chechen and during his exile the british court actually litigated the extradition request but rejected it on lack of evidence - rule of law 1 russians 0 (and the russians arent exactly reliable narrators)

Did you read that story? Is this a gag post? I mean seriously.

At any rate why doesn't Assange want to go back to Sweden? It isn't Saudi ****ing Arabia or Communist ****ing China. It's the Swedes. How the **** does anyone give you political asylum to keep the Swedes from persecuting you? I bet that it would be a really neat trick for anyone in the Swedish government to actually persecute anyone. If you are innocent of this date rape charge you should want to prove it.

If someone accused me of raping these girls and I did not, I would be most eager to prove that I had not. Even if I were guilty I would think it a very difficult charge to prove. If he isn't guilty then he's a retard.

His crime? BEING 50 Shades of Grey. Please, if this was the US, this wouldn't even be a trial.

Quote:
July 14 - Clare Montgomery, representing the Swedish authorities, tells a judge that two women who accused Assange of sexual assault did not freely consent to his advances but felt "trapped" into "submitting to his will".

Quote:
Swedish prosecutors told AOL News last week that Assange was not wanted for rape as has been reported, but for something called “sex by surprise” or “unexpected sex.”

He thinks it's a ruse that the United States is pulling the strings for in order to eventually get him to the states for prosecution.

He wasn't even 50 shades of gray. Consent was withdrawn after the act, essentially. Got to protect those poor women from regretting their actions. RAPE!

Bradley Manning is a pretty ****ing legit point, BTW.
