Rep. Todd Akin, a Republican who's locked in a hard-fought campaign in Missouri to unseat Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, was answering a question regarding his position on abortion rights in instances when a woman is a victim of rape.

"People always want to make it into one of those things — well, how do you slice this particularly tough ethical question," Akin said in an interview on KTVI-TV, video of which was circulated by the Democratic super PAC American Bridge.

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors, [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," Akin said.

Well it sounds fake to me, and wouldn't be justification for banning all abortion anyway, but is that true?

Just a quick search on Google and I found this study:

Among 34 cases of rape-related pregnancy, the majority occurred among adolescents and resulted from assault by a known, often related perpetrator. Only 11.7% of these victims received immediate medical attention after the assault, and 47.1% received no medical attention related to the rape. A total 32.4% of these victims did not discover they were pregnant until they had already entered the second trimester; 32.2% opted to keep the infant whereas 50% underwent abortion and 5.9% placed the infant for adoption; an additional 11.8% had spontaneous abortion.

It's a bit dated, but clearly it's not that rare to get pregnant from rape.

no you dont understand, women's bodies are magical , this guy knows what he's talking about, you can tell he's had a lot of experience with rape and women's bodies and such like

So 5%... that's probably right on the dot for how often unprotected sex to completion leads to pregnancy. If anything it seems almost a little high because a lot of those women will be on the pill.

This is perfectly logical. You guys are all corrupted by the liberal media taking his words out of context. A doctor told him this stuff too, so unless any of you guys got 9 years at a medical school in Haiti you should not cast the first stone.

He's a representative running for Senate. Without knowing the details I'd almost bet that this guy comes from a safely gerrymandered district where winning the Republican primary is pretty close to winning the general election. In that case it is a big plus for him if he is a right wing looney. The only real threat to an incumbent in a district like that is someone more right wing crazy than they are. Those are the primary voters.

If you're running in a state wide election it's not a good idea to look this far from moderate, unless you're from Texas or something where no one will vote for a Democrat.

Maybe he thinks that you need to feel good in order to get pregnant. So if the person got pregnant during rape that must mean that it felt good, therefore it wouldn't be a legitimate rape.

Akin's comments also brought a swift rebuke from the campaign of presumptive Republican Party presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

"Governor Romney and Congressman (Paul) Ryan disagree with Mr. Akin's statement, and a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape," Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said.

Rough day. Seems like he no longer has the backing of the GOP candidate. I like it when people face consequences of doing stupid stuff.
