Iraq was a farce to control oil. That's a whole different story.

I wish I could forget him, but the sneaky bastard found a way to win a third term in office. It's like we're stuck in a Being John Malkovichian nightmare and can't escape.

Re: Being...out of touch

The real logic behind the Iraq invasion was that the Neoconservatives apparently believed that it would make Israel safer. Hard to figure out how they got to that conclusion, but I don't know why we should not hang people who want to fight a war for the benefit of another country.

Some of the more naive (or cynical) people in the government claimed that Iraq's oil would pay for the war, but that was moronic. It's been over a decade and Iraq's oil production is just now recovering.

Re: Being...out of touch

Had nothing to do with Israel, they were more worried about Iran than Iraq. Hussein's real threat was in trying to convince OPEC to abandon the dollar as the reserve currency. If the OPEC countries were buying up Euros rather than dollars the US economy would have sunk quickly.

Bullshit. You, the people, wanted it.
The entire thing was manufactured from the beginning, including the public support... it was a special storm coming together that allowed the neo-conservatives to to mount that war behind the Bush administration. And, some of us the people protested in the streets by the hundreds of thousands.

Re: Being...out of touch

Actually a weaker dollar would have helped the US economy in most ways. An expensive dollar makes it impossible for us to compete in manufacturing. We have been complaining about the Chinese artificially keeping the Yuan low for over a decade for exactly this reason. Currency had nothing to do with it and Saddam didn't really have any friends in OPEC any way.

Re: Being...out of touch

If the dollar is no longer the world's reserve currency treasury bill interest rates have to be adjusted upwards to make the dollar a more attractive investment. That means that interest payments on the national debt go up and a larger and larger portion of annual budgets get devoted to paying interest on the national debt. The day the dollar ceases to be the world's reserve currency life as you know it is over.

Whether it is judicial appointments or administrative and regulatory decisions, national defense... it matters. It may be shades of gray on some issues, but to dismiss politics in general is just as naive as believing that your vote is going to change the direction of the country. Mostly, if you aren't voting you're letting some other idiot decide.

Also, the presidential election is just one office... state and local elections can make a big difference.
I've come to accept that whether I vote or not, some idiot is going decide. Local elections can matter if you care about local issues; generally I do not.

Re: Being...out of touch

I think the only reason I knew the RNC was last week is because it was about 50 miles away from me.

As far as voting is concerned, I plan on voting for president but not for Obama or Romney. Out of curiosity, what is this board's opinion of that? Am I "throwing my vote away"?

You are going to cast a write in vote for Hobo Joe...Or maybe Krusty the Clown. It might be fun to organize something like that....We could get people to vote a Straight cartoon character ticket.

It's annoying when people do that, huh?

And now you're changing your argument further to "Look, I'm not saying you can't sway local politics, I'm talking about this big picture here."
My argument has been the same throughout. Go back, read my posts. Stick with doing you and trying to make your life and the life around you better, because John Doe can not change the way the world will pan out.

I actually do wish you could actively vote for None of the Above. So that people who cared but weren't convinced could display their dissatisfaction with the choices available in a tangible manner, rather than staying at home.

That's called bitching, and it doesn't help anything.
