Tolerating Islam

Quote:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...n_1876544.html

TRIPOLI, Libya -- The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed in an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi by protesters angry over a film that ridiculed Islam's Prophet Muhammad.

Ambassador Chris Stevens, 52, died as he and a group of embassy employees went to the consulate to try to evacuate staff as the building came under attack by a mob firing machine-guns and rocket-propelled grenades. He was the first U.S. ambassador to be killed in the line of duty since 1979.

President Barack Obama ordered increased security to protect U.S. diplomatic personnel around world.

"I strongly condemn the outrageous attack on our diplomatic facility in Benghazi," Obama said, adding the four Americans "exemplified America's commitment to freedom, justice, and partnership with nations and people around the globe."

The attack in Libya came hours after Egyptian protesters climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, pulling down the American flag and temporarily replacing it with a black Islamic banner.
I'm all for religious tolerance and would be the first to point out that there are plenty of christian nutjobs out there but even Terry Jones and Westboro baptist couldnt muster this kind of crazy (and when they do muster they're a paltry crew numbering in the single digits not one that musters in the thousands)

I know there are plenty of moderate well educated muslims who you could feasibly have a half rational conversation with or even enjoy as neighbors but the proportion of bat **** crazy in that religion and it's tendencies toward extreme violence over what appears to me to be petty bullshit, the extremes of the sharia, the treatment of women in that culture and shit like this all add up to make me want to issue a very simple ultimatum: get out of the ****ing middle ages or we turn your entire region into a sea of glass

because seriously, you tube? screw you islam

A critical film does not justify killing people. It's that simple.

It's not that simple. They have proved time and time again that they are willing to kill and die for their beliefs. Why would a filmmaker do something to provoke that type of reaction? It's pure ignorance on his part. That does not in any way excuse the extreme measures taken in the reaction, but seriously... what was that guy thinking? I wonder if the Jewish community members who donated their hard earned money towards his $5 million project really knew what they were buying.

Re: Tolerating Islam

It really is that simple. He's entitled to his opinion whether they like it or not. Do you believe that no criticism of Islam should be allowed?

What if Mormons had rioted over the Book of Mormon musical. Would you say that nobody can criticize them anymore?

This is an extremely short-sighted question. Who is doing the criticizing and who is doing the allowing?

The bill of rights was very clearly directed at US Citizens. That does not mean it is always an effective handbook on foreign diplomacy.

Re: Tolerating Islam

and it was a US citizen exercising his rights in the US who made this film (actually he's probably a Mossad agent provocatuer)

so i guess that's just the cross we bear, that's what makes us who we are - it's like bush said, they hate us for our freedoms (I say this with tongue firmly in cheek)

Re: Tolerating Islam

The guy who made this film got precisely what he wanted. He's trolling the Arabs and Muslims. He makes a film that depicts their religion is as poor a light as he could imagine, almost certainly of inciting exactly the type of reaction he got. He wants them to behave as they did, because it empowers him and those who share his beliefs to feel as though they have the right to treat them as though they were less than human.

The attack that killed the ambassador appears to have been more or less unrelated to the rest of this however. It was likely a planned attack specifically for September 11th, taking advantage of the current security vacuum and deluge of military hardware in Libya.
