Chicago Teacher's Strike
Quote:
I like the idea of unions, but sometimes they go too far. The key here is that some system has to be developed for evaluating teachers, even within the most difficult environments, such as inner city Chicago. Not sure how you can ask for a raise while claiming there is no to evaluate educators. If there's no evaluation process, then how can you determine who gets a raise? |

Re: Chicago Teacher's Strike
The Union's problem with the evaluation system is that it is based on students scores on a standardized test... imagine being given a brand new curriculum, being forced to basically teach to a test and then being laid off anyway because your draw of students that year just didn't happen to be that bright (and in far too many cases did not have support from home). Anyway, the CTU is a strong advocate for public education, the Chicago schools and the students they serve. I commend them for having the guts to go on strike to earn a fair contract. A lot of the concern of the Union centers around Chicago closing schools and cutting back on curriculum... I hear the school district wants to hire new (read: cheaper) people instead of bringing back the staff they laid off when they closed many of those schools, if so, I'm sure that's a major sticking point for the Union.
One thing I would say from having been a party to a fair number of labor negotiations is that you cannot judge things without knowing the totality of the parties' proposals. It is easy for either side to isolate individual proposals and take things out of context.

Re: Chicago Teacher's Strike
Teachers talk about how valuable they are, but then turn around and say teachers can't do anything to improve performance.

Re: Chicago Teacher's Strike
I just don't see why we need standardized tests? Why not have the educator submit their curriculum to the school, once it's approved, then THAT is how they're evaluated. If they can get their class to pass the curriculum, what does it matter? Oh no! it's not fair for the ghetto schools! Well, not everyone needs to get a HS diploma. Statistical correlation with respects to the failure rate of the students needs to be accounted for. A teacher in Highland Park should have a 100% pass rate while a teacher in Englewood would be lucky to get 60%.

Must be nice. "I don't agree with how you determine whether I'm doing my job and by the way, if I am fired, you have to hire me back before you look at someone who may be better."

Re: Chicago Teacher's Strike
You don't think employees should be evaluated based on fair criteria? And the issue is not employees who get "fired" for cause... the issues is employees who were laid off (presumably because the District couldn't afford to keep them on or closed their school) who did nothing wrong that are left out to dry while they hire new people.

Re: Chicago Teacher's Strike
Can you grade a rock n roll performance?
So how can you grade the performance of a teacher. Granted scores may tell you something, but not everything. there are so many factors that go into the performance of a teacher. I remember doing horrible in certain classes. But that was because I was busy worrying about the big breast chick that sat next to me. It had nothing to do with the ability of the teacher. Blame that should be put on parents is somehow getting shifted over to the teachers. If we make all schools private it's going to be the same shit. There will be private schools that underperform and those that do exceptional. The problem with education is that it's run by women. We all know women are horrible at math and science.
