His wife looks incredibly uncomfortable in that video. She looks like a nice married woman being put out of her comfort zone.

Are you insinuating that Paul Ryan is gay? He certainly works out a lot...

Haha, the right is coming out HARD against Nate Silver, calling him weak and effeminate and saying he manipulates the data.

All kinds of smart people came out to defend him including John Hollinger, which I thought was a little weird.

Seeing as I'm unable to combat your usage of irrefutable statistics describing how votes go as predicted without voting machines and veer from the curve when voting machines are in place, I'll reduce to mocking your sexuality and calling you effeminate in a manner expected from your average self-proclaimed conservative blogger or shock jock - Dean Chambers

Team blue gets too hooked on that image. And like to forget their hand in the disaster. But the disaster wasn't the Mujahadeen, it was their kids who were exiled to Madrassas run by Wahabbi and Deobandi clerics, which happened because of the coup that we supported in Pakistan. Under Jimmeh Carteh. The future Taliban were kids when that photo was taken. I dare say that the Afghan fighters were as shocked as we were to see what their kids had turned into.

Well, the future Taliban was older than kids when that photo was taken, unless their leaders were all younger than me in 2002.

^That picture doesn't really hold any weight unless you really want to spin it. Those guys were cool back in Rambo 3.

A better picture would be Bush Sr. shaking Saddam's hand. Forget the context though.

The actual Taliban, in '82 or '83 (when that photo was taken) would have all been under the age of 15 or so. The leaders of the Taliban were Pakistani clerics loyal to Zia. Those were the guys that got control of Afghanistan's youth during that time (essentially the fighters sent their families to live in refugee camps in Pakistan, where their kids' education was radically different than their own).

The CIA sent checks to General Zia, Zia and his secret service used the money to support themselves while raising an army of fanatics that were supposed to conquer Afghanistan and turn it into a satellite state. Only it didn't quite work out the way they planned. (It's amazing how much of Pinky & the Brain plays out in the real world.)

Re: Mitt Romney hits 50% in wapo/abc poll

Well the Mujaheddin were the root problem because none of them could talk to one another after they drove the Soviets out. Instead they all started carving out their own little fiefdoms, many of which are still extant. The Pakistanis were basically interested in anyone who could give them a stable Afghanistan and the Taliban just happened to be the best option that they could find, although for once some of Munro's BS has some basis in fact. Zia introduced a more radical form of Islam to Pakistan deliberately as a way to unify a Nation which was essentially nothing of the sort. The Army wanted to keep the people focused on external threats, rather than have them looking inward at all the problems that the Army and the ruling classes had neither the means nor the desire to confront.

Re: Mitt Romney hits 50% in wapo/abc poll

Actually, my "BS" has a lot more "basis in fact" than your "facts" which generally bear very little resemblance to reality. (Care to tell us again that all those Pakistanis that witnessed the missile strikes are engaged in a vast conspiracy to discredit the US again? I'm guessing you're also going to tell us that all the photos of the dead women & children were really photoshopped and the international organisations that have documented the casualties are all part of the secret muslim plan to conquer the world).

If by "nation" you mean "culture" then the answer "of course it isn't a ****ing culture because 'Pakistan' started as the provinces of east and northwest imperial India that were designated as the safe zones for Indian muslims to relocate to" (because they were already predominantly muslim). Ethnically west Pakistan was predominantly Punjabi and Pashtun with Sindhis and other west Indian muslims mixed in (there's also a Baluch minority there). Zia most certainly didn't want his people to start looking at him and his cronies and their looting after the coup, so they introduced a brand of Islam that they hoped would make the populace obedient.

And Pakistan created the Taliban, it wasn't "they wanted someone to give them a stable Afghanistan" they created them. Those Afghan kids were sent to ISI administered refugee camps, and the Pakistani Army was in effective control of all those Pashtun kids living there. They brought them up to be exactly what they wanted them to be, the conquering army. But, like most of the insane schemes hatched by government's true believers, things went horribly awry for them.
