Re: After Israel, Hamas reach Gaza cease-fire, both sides claim victory

Netanyahu and Hamas are on exactly the same page. They both want exactly the same thing, their own damned way. Every day Abu Mazen looks more and more like a fool for ever believing that he could get anything from negotiations. There is no one for him to talk to.

God damn Chris Bosh

And btw Smath, you're talking to Americans who DO think it was stupid bullshit to invade Iraq. The fact that you stand by Bush's decision to do that makes you look much less credible, not more.

They did say there would be repercussions... Withholding tax revenues would be much more of a response, but I doubt Bibi is going to do anything drastic right now.

Silly me, I thought killing 25 Palestinians for every dead Israeli was the repercussion. But more violations of international law is always good.

You're confusing repercussions for the UN maneuvering (directed at the PA, i.e. Fatah) with a response to terrorism (directed at Hamas)

There's plenty of blame to go around on both sides of this issue. I see way too much Ulster in the West Bank, though. Israel's never going to be secure until there's a separate Palestinian state run by moderates.

I can't think of a screwier situation wherein so many third parties have such a vested interest in allowing the conflict to continue...

Re: After Israel, Hamas reach Gaza cease-fire, both sides claim victory

The Israeli right obviously intends for the conflict to continue forever. Since the people who are set up destroying the prospects for peace are running the state of Israel, it's highly doubtful that the USA has any real interest in continuing to support them. We are getting nothing positive from our relation with Israel whatsoever. In fact this entire settlement thing in East Jerusalem is a great big **** you to the United States government.

Netanyahu has decided that he can do exactly what he wants even if it is diametrically opposed to the wishes of our government, and still have untold billions of US tax payer dollars at the same time. Sad thing is that our government is so spineless on this issue that he'll get away with it.

I think they're buying themselves a few more decades worth of time by keeping Hamas the face of the opposition. I have to believe that there will be some sort of separation between Israel and Palestine within the next 100 years, but if Israel's given enough time they can settle enough people on the eastern side of Jerusalem to keep the city and a significant enough buffer zone around it firmly within the state of Israel. I wouldn't be surprised if they hold on to Gaza, as well, claiming the government of the theoretical Palestinian state is incapable of policing it.

They don't have any intention of giving up anything. If the US really wanted to put an end to the conflict, we'd disengage and give an apology to the Palestinians.
