WASHINGTON, Jan. 26, 2012 – Spending priorities in the forthcoming fiscal 2013 defense budget request call for reductions in the end strength of the Army and Marine Corps, an increase in special operations forces and maintaining the number of big-deck carriers, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta said here today.

The Pentagon’s budget topline request is set at $525 billion for fiscal 2013 with an additional $88.4 billion for overseas contingency operations -- mostly in Afghanistan. This is down from $531 billion and $115 billion, respectively, in this fiscal year.http://www.defense.gov/news/newsarticle.aspx?id=66940

WASHINGTON | Thu Dec 20, 2012 9:22pm EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives approved the final version of the annual defense policy bill on Thursday, authorizing $633.3 billion in defense spending for 2013, easing limits on satellite exports and providing more Marines for embassy security.

The Republican-controlled House approved the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act by a vote of 315-107. The measure must still be approved by the Senate before it can go to President Barack Obama to be signed into law.

The measure authorizes a Pentagon base budget of $527.5 billion, plus $88.5 billion for overseas operations, primarily the war in Afghanistan. The base budget includes $17.4 billion for defense-related nuclear programs at the Energy Department. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/...8BJ1FQ20121221

Re: oh congress

Budget cuts mean almost nothing before tax reform is enacted.

Re: oh congress

Corporate welfare is always Congress' #1 priority. I'm not sure why this is such a shock. I recall a piece in The Atlantic a quarter century ago, analysing the Ronnie Raygun budget mess. And as it turned out Congressional spending exceeded Ronnie's proposed budgets every single year. And this included military spending. Congress outspent the military budget requests of the biggest sabre rattler this side of Zorro.

But that's the fatal flaw of democracy, once you create livings from public largesse the interest groups that benefit will fight to the death for their sinecures, whereas for the people that pay the bills that extra billion here or there makes little difference to them.

take a closer look - they largely followed Panetta's proposal, took them a year of bullshit and it happened with little or no fanfare but they managed it

For once I completely agree with your assessment. I actually said almost the same thing to my coworkers a few days ago.
