Re: The Gun Debate
Pistols are easier/cheaper to obtain, which stands to reason that they is much more common in the general public which would be causative to more violent crimes resulting from pistols.
And just a heads up, I'm not left wing. I don't side with either extreme.

Re: The Gun Debate
Nothing positive can come from letting civilians own assault rifles. There doesn't need to be a discussion.
The important part is how we regulate hand guns and bullets. I say we make people by gun insurance. Owning a gun is a very big responsibility, and it should be a large financial commitment. Gun manufacturing should be nationalized.

Re: The Gun Debate
Anyone picture this guy having Duck Dynasty on in the background as he posts?
"It only takes 1 bullet." Yea. It does. And if the guy at Sandy Hook could only have a pistol, the death count would have been far far less. Guys like you thinking you should get to own a weapon that could level 20+ people in a matter of seconds disgust me. It's "your right?" Why? What the **** has someone like you ever done to have anything as their right, let alone something as ludicrous as owning a military grade gun?

Re: The Gun Debate
Well, as "assault rifle" is a designation for cosmetic features for guns that look scary (telescoping stocks, bayonet mounts, etc.) I'm not certain what the question is.

Re: The Gun Debate
Huh? Fully automatic weapons have been illegal for decades.

Re: The Gun Debate
The weapon that was used in Newtown is the same weapon used by about a half dozen European special forces units, with small differences. Namely the military versions have the option of 3 round burst fire and slightly different stocks.
An assault rifle is mostly defined by the fact that it usually fires a military style cartridge, that is a bullet which is designed to kill people who are wearing body armor. The Bushmaster is chambered for several rounds, mostly the .223 used by the M-4 and the M-16, but also the Nato 5.56mm and 7.65 mm rounds. These are bullets which have a specific design function, killing human beings and killing human beings who are taking countermeasures against anti-personnel weapons. Acting as though it is no different from any other weapon is unfathomably stupid. God I hate ideologues.

Re: The Gun Debate
It takes as little as 10 minutes of grinding and soldering to make an assault rifle automatic.

Re: The Gun Debate
Haven't read through the whole thread yet but I do live in the south so I'm definitely exposed to gun culture probably moreso than some of the other people on this site.
My opinion can be described perfectly in two of my friends, Robbie and Jake, who are both gun owners. Robbie, a responsible adult has multiple guns, used mostly for hunting but also for protection. I have no problem with this. I don't personally feel the need to own a firearm, but if a person is mature enough to handle the very big responsibility of owning a gun then I don't have an issue. Jake, on the other hand, is an immature child who plays with his guns when he's hammered, is emotionally unstable, and is probably the stupidest person I've ever met in my life. I don't think it's safe that people like Jake can own a gun. So I do think that guns should be available to people who will not abuse them, but I am all for making the process of obtaining a firearm more extensive and difficult, and would not be opposed to mandatory psychiatric evaluations before a person is able to own a gun. I also don't see why assault rifles are necessary and therefore would have no problem with them being banned.
