NY Newspaper Draws Flak for Putting Gun Owners on Map

By Michael Mullins

A suburban New York City newspaper published an interactive map showing the addresses of thousands of local residents with handgun permits and has drawn flak from gun owners, some of whom expressed their anger via the newspaper's Facebook page.

The Monday article in The Journal News was headlined "The gun owner next door: What you don't know about the weapons in your neighborhood," and was in response to the Dec. 14 school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

"Do you fools realize that you also made a map for criminals to use to find homes to rob that have no guns in them to protect themselves? What a bunch of liberal boobs you all are," wrote one reader.

I remember when a teacher assigned us a current events project drawn from the newspaper and we weren't allowed to use the Journal News...

Anyway, can anybody offer a reasonable explanation as to how publishing the names and addresses of registered handgun permit holders does ANYTHING? It wouldn't even give any useful indication of the psycho who hoards assault rifles next door...

Re: NY Newspaper Draws Flak for Putting Gun Owners on Map

Don't gun owners always say that having a gun in the house is a deterrent for thieves? Shouldn't they feel more protected now that all of their neighbors and potential criminals know they're packing heat?

Anyway, the question posed is "how does it do anything"... I suppose the answer is that it informs and paints a picture of gun ownership in the area, though they probably could have done that another way. Whether it has to "do anything" beyond that I guess depends on whether you think every article needs to serve some sort of larger social purpose... my guess is that it was done in-part to sell papers/online subscriptions.

In any event, it was all information that was already available to the public.

Re: NY Newspaper Draws Flak for Putting Gun Owners on Map

This was definitely all about selling papers. In point of fact, I know a number of people in some of those counties who have firearms in their homes, but don't own handguns.

Re: NY Newspaper Draws Flak for Putting Gun Owners on Map

You don't need a license for a shotgun and that is the weapon of choice for close quarter combat. You hit them almost anywhere and they are dead. Torso? Every organ is shredded. Thigh? Femoral artery I'd opened and they bleed out before the ambulance can even get there. Arm? Brachiocephalic artery gets opened and same thing happens.

Listing gun owners in the city is stupid though. However I would be very impressed if a burglar used them as a resource.

^ At the very least, a burglar assuming someone only owns a handgun might just chance it and wear a bulletproof vest

Re: NY Newspaper Draws Flak for Putting Gun Owners on Map

Guns are of interest to thieves because you can easily sell them at a pretty decent price.

Seems to me like you should be able to sue the publisher and editor over this. The First Amendment does not protect your right to gossip. This isn't journalism and it's not protected speech IMO.

I fail to see how it isn't protected speech.

It is protected speech, though somebody might easily try to sue on infringement of privacy grounds. I can't think of a way for that sort of case to win, of course.
