Sure, the biggest problem the US has is in dealing with crazies. But that's a really complex topic that doesn't fit into 30 second soundbites, so I doubt that anything ever gets done about it. However, I'll also note that the article writer is unintentionally correct when they say "Gun lobbyists who might think Israel hands out guns freely to keep its citizens safe might be less enamored of Israel's actual gun laws." Because I'm pretty sure that the NRA doesn't support the position of only arming native-born white Americans. They're pretty universalist.

Crazies vote, and vote loudly...

Israeli gun control laws are restrictive for everyone. Anyone who served in the military (and can show a need and a number of other factors) can apply for a gun license EDIT: at the age of 21, rather than the norm of 27 otherwise, including Israeli Arabs, Bedouin and Druze. As for your larger point, the NRA is universalist in trying to ensure every civilian has guns, the Israeli government is fairly the polar opposite of that.

Yes, but the military there is everyone of age to serve. And just in case that doesn't catch everyone they arm the settlers as well. Which leaves the Palestinians.

No it's not. A significant percentage of the ultra-Orthodox refuse to serve, for starters. And the Palestinian Authority IS armed, and has in fact been cracking down harshly on illegal weapons and weapons sales throughout the West Bank, though that has little to do with Israel and much to do with PA fears of Hamas replicating its Gaza Strip coup. Come to think of it, I remember some point back when I started law school ('04ish) that the PA had enacted a complete ban on civilian weapons, but I don't believe it was ever actually enforced.

The more I think about LaPierre's comment, the more I try to think of a country where it actually plays out that way... Unless we include armed security for elite private schools, I can't think of anywhere.

Re: Israel rejects NRA's guns-in-schools claim

There are armed security guards at American schools right now. Just because it isn't majority white schools in the 'burbs does not change the fact that it is in effect right now.
