Chris Christie drops bomb on GOP leaders

Pulling no punches, Christie declared: "Last night, the House majority failed most basic test of leadership and they did so with callous disregard to the people of my state. ... It was disappointing and disgusting to watch." He also unapologetically named names: "There's only one group to blame ... the House majority, and their Speaker, John Boehner." He added that the relief bill "just could not overcome the toxic internal politics of the House majority."

But Christie also took the high road in terms of decrying the overall atmosphere of hyperpartisanship in D.C., arguing correctly that "Americans are tired of the palace intrigue and political partisanship of this Congress ... this used to be something that was not political. Disaster relief was something that you didn't play games with."

This is more on Congress funding the disaster agencies, KAS. Without funding the disaster agencies cannot do anything.

This is all about a dysfunctional Congress and its political whores, really.

Blame Harry Reid. After the bill came out of the House, the Senate loaded it with billions of pet spending that has nothing to do with Sandy relief.

It's bizarre that Christie decided to attack his own party on this when the delays have legitimately been due to Democratic meddling in the Senate. It may have just been a ploy to get his state the money it needed, pork be damned, but the cynical side of me can't help but view it as shameless headline grabbing and posturing in an attempt to brand himself as the "people's conservative" for 2016.

These aren't exactly pork, they're just a lot of spending items. The Alaskan fisheries need that money..... I got nothing.

Anyways, a bill is passed by the House first. So..... how is this Reid's fault that Republican states are taking freebies?

Funding I blame squarely on Congress, but FEMA deserves its own share of blame... yet again.

Yankees don't appear to be very good at this stuff. I've been through about a dozen storms that were worse than this one. Down here we'd pretty much shrug off a storm like that.

Eh, it's not legislation that should be held up, but you definitely shouldn't be able to use disaster relief measures to push through completely unrelated spending on the basis that nobody's going to take the political hit involved in delaying/rejecting the bill. That's just outright abuse of the whole concept of emergency disaster relief.

I'm firmly of the "pox on both their houses" party these days, stemming from inexcusable failures by elected officials on both sides of the aisle immediately after the storm and since then.

Incidentally, I found Peter King's condemnation much more shocking than Christie.

Nothing like this had been seen in the region for at least 50 years, and there was no infrastructure to cope with it, no redundancy, nothing. Hell, the Long Beach boardwalk had managed to shield the city from Irene last year, and Sandy simply destroyed it en route to hurling sand a mile north. Add the flooding everywhere else near the shore...

Put it another way - my house was built after the area was declared a flood hazard zone in the late '70s. We still got flooded significantly, and were literally an inch away from losing our entire first floor as well. And that's WITH being built higher etc.
